The Experience

Views soar up the Jurassic coast all the way to Chesil Beach and on to Portland Bill. It sits high on the hill with one foot in town and the other paddling in the water. Directly below, the Cobb curls into the sea. Outside, there’s a sun-trapping garden, where guests fall asleep in deckchairs, then a lookout tower with big sea views for a romantic dinner for two.

Inside, an easy elegance flows: stripped wood floors, windows everywhere, an airy bar for pre-dinner drinks, an attractive sitting room with lots of books. There’s a smart breakfast room (delicious continental or full English, smoked salmon with avocado, poached eggs) that could double as a ballroom, then a sun-filled conservatory for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Both offer tasty, local food – perhaps Lyme Bay scallops, chicken with cavolo nero, a white chocolate mousse.

Reviews

Excellent staff, helpful, friendly receptionists and good service in the bar and dining room. Good quality, fresh food. Fabulous view over Lyme Regis from SV rooms and hotel gardens.

I loved my stay at the Alexandra Hotel Lyme Regis. I had two rooms and my friend a third, and all were comfortable, clean, spacious, and each had a reading nook (where I nodded off each night). The staff is attentive and ready to help at any time. The breakfast was delicious—I chose Eggs Benedict, a dish I never fix at home. Over my time in Lyme Regis and London, I had fish and chips about four times and the Alexandra’s version was absolutely the best: the light, crisp batter with sea salt sprinkled over the top made this stand out over all the others. I highly recommend this hotel!

A delightful place to stay and be looked after. A superb position looking out to sea over the hotel's extensive lawn and gardens. Most comfortable bedroom. Ask for one with a sea view if budget allows. Attentive, cheerful and most helpful staff, Relaxed and comfortable.

Chris, Westerham, Kent

A beautiful quintessentially English hotel, nearly 300 years old. Very welcoming with lovely staff and tastefully decorated. The atmosphere is understated and relaxed and fits perfectly with the stunning sea views over Lyme bay itself. My husband and I agreed it is one of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed in and we have been lucky enough to travel quite widely. We are very blessed that we live only an hour further along the coast and are already planning a return trip.

We were a party of 6 staying over the weekend to celebrate a big birthday and we had the most wonderful time. The staff in every section of the hotel are exceptional, so friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant is outstanding, such a big choice, nothing was repeated over the three nights we were there.

Ian, Wimborne, Dorset

We had a fabulous stay at the Alexander Hotel, Lyme Regis. We could not fault it and definitely fell for Lyme Regis. The Hotel was so accommodating.

Amanda, Winchester

Staff made a good place to stay into an exceptional place to stay and eat. The staff couldn’t do enough for you which was so refreshing in these times.

Celestine, Herefordshire

Highly recommended. We had an excellent stay. Extremely comfortable room, excellent food and very fast service. Staff helpful, friendly and effective. The hotel itself had a gorgeous atmosphere.

Renée, Ashford

Beautiful location in the heart of Lyme Regis. The hotel was smart and comfortable, and the staff very welcoming; nothing was too much trouble. Great breakfast choice and the dinner we had in the conservatory restaurant was exceptional. A return visit is being planned

Craig, Bath

Just spent 4 nights in the lovely Alexandra Hotel at Lyme Regis. Wonderful location with easy access to the beach, stunning views from our room and very helpful and friendly staff. The breakfasts and dinners are really excellent. I would heartily recommend to anyone looking for a restful break in a quiet and beautiful setting.

Sheila, Birmingham

We stayed at The Alexandra for a second time on our traditional winter visit to Lyme Regis and we really are very fond of this hotel! The rooms are warm and comfortable and, as it was quiet, we were delighted to be upgraded to one on the first floor overlooking the garden and sea. The place feels both stylish and homely and is really pleasant to spend time in when the weather outside is less than clement. I think they were a bit short-staffed during our visit, which meant the occasional short wait to get served at the bar and when checking in, but all the staff were really friendly, efficie

Sarah, Brighton

Hi Milly, many thanks for another wonderful break at the Alexandra hotel. I cannot remember if it was our fourth or fifth visit, but it was great to see that your standards as high as they were the first time, we stayed with you about ten years ago. Keep up the good work, and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

Brian&Isobel, Chiswick

Lovely friendly staff good food and excellent all around.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're within walking distance of all the shops and restaurants on the high street. The beach is a 2-minute walk for lovely picnics, swimming and paddle boarding, foraging for fossils. Sandy beaches are also nearby and you can join the Coast Path with a packed lunch ordered from the hotel. There are plenty of activities from January's costumed hurl into the sea to fireworks in November.
