The Experience
You stay in the private wing of the farmhouse with views over farmland, river or courtyard. There’s a grass landing strip so it’s possible to arrive by plane (by prior arrangement of course); horses can be stabled too.
Breakfast choices change often – a convivial affair by the wood-burner in the big sitting room: eggs from the hens in the orchard, perhaps mushrooms on toast with chives, avocado on sourdough with chilli and lime or blueberry pancakes with maple syrup, homemade preserves and freshly-squeezed orange juice.
Have supper at Rachel and Bill’s favourite inn The Beckford Arms in Fonthill Gifford (a 20-minute drive); Rachel gives you a helpful list of other nearby eateries, interesting shops and places to visit too.

Think open fields outside your window where horses and sheep roam freely. Rachel Hall runs this exceptional place and is a welcoming, interesting hostess. Furnishings and décor are high end, yet the atmosphere so relaxed that it’s tempting to give in to the pervading peace and quiet and loll around all day on the squashy sofas and chairs in the guests’ impressive sitting-room. We felt utterly spoiled in the spacious ground floor Blue Room which offered every imaginable comfort including fine toiletries, slippers, and a private terrace. Cross fingers, we'll be back.

Location
The neighbourhood
The farm is within the medieval Royal Forest of Gillingham on the edge of the Blackmore Vale. Once part of King John's deer park, there are 140 acres of pasture with sheep and Rachel’s horses, mixed woodland and river. Walks start from the farm – Rachel and Bill have produced a map of trails - and you’re in wonderful riding countryside. You’re six miles from National Trust Stourhead – one of the best places in England to visit for autumn colours. There’s a good village shop in Motcombe (two-mile drive); Shaftesbury – for Gold Hill, the Abbey and independent arty shops – is 15 minutes by car; the Jurassic Coast is an hour.
Local points of interest from Rachel Hall
- You are 10 minutes from the famous 18th century gardens of Stourhead. Walk the lake stopping off at beautiful classical follies and temples on the way, visit the grotto and sip hot chocolate in the tiny thatched cottage in the trees on a winter's afternoon
- If walking is your passion then follow the ancient drovers' tracks over Cranborne Chase, abundant with wildflowers in summer. Drop down to a local pub for a quick bite and perhaps visit Cranborne Manor and it's lovely garden on the way home.
- For art you are in luck: we are 20 mins from the Hauser & Wirth gallery, set in an elegant courtyard, with gardens and an excellent restaurant. And Messums, Tisbury is situated in a magnificent thatched barn, with great exhibitions, events and a cafe.
- A trip to the Jurassic coast is a must. Enjoy spectacular clifftop walks, secluded bays, swim off Dancing Ledge, find fossils, eat fresh crab from the cabin at Lulworth Cove, stroll along the sands of West Bay and finish with a proper cream tea at Eype.

Introducing
Rachel Hall
Rachel moved to Dorset from Oxfordshire in 2005; she lives at Gutchpool Farm where she runs the farm and offers B&B. She loves welcoming guests to the farm, and paints, sews and writes in her spare time. She’s Scottish, grew up in the Borders, and the family like going there to walk, cycle, swim and fish for salmon.
A delightful place to stay. The room was perfect and the living area for guests warm, inviting and comfortable. Rachel is a charming hostess and goes out of her way to make you feel at home. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.
