The Experience

Down through hills, wild heaths and pine forests to Lulworth. Carole and John’s home is set back from the cove in a peaceful lane; artist and garden designer, their 1980s house is a creative treasure, inside and out.

Both the bedrooms are on the ground floor and one opens to its own terrace. Wake for a generous breakfast served upstairs in the open-plan living space – or outside on balmy days. It’s a half hour drive to the Square and Compass pub in Worth Matravers for fossils, real ale and homemade pasties.

Wander round a garden full of banana trees, ferns, deep borders and a pergola with scrambling abundant grape vines. Walk to the sea in 10 minutes or climb over the cliffs to secret Mupe Cove for an early morning swim. Lulworth Cove has various good places to eat out and you can walk there in a few minutes.

Reviews

Nigel & Ruth, Laleham, Surrey

We had a wonderfully relaxing time at John and Carole’s Lulworth House B&B, staying in the Garden Suite for 5 nights. The suite was spotlessly clean and tidy and had all the amenities we required for our stay as well as the beautiful garden, which added to the tranquillity of the location. We enjoyed the daily choice of breakfast with fresh fruit. Carole and John were friendly and welcoming hosts and very knowledgeable about Dorset, giving us tips on coastal drives, places to walk and visit. Lulworth House B&B is the perfect spot to explore all that Dorset has to offer. Thank you, Nigel & Ruth

Julie, Exeter

We had four wonderful nights at Lulworth House early in June. Two best friends meeting up for a twice yearly catch up. Carole and John could not have been better hosts. They were welcoming, friendly and made us feel very much at home whilst maintaining a professional service. We stayed in both rooms, Garden Suite and Garden Room which, effectively, meant that we had private use of the ground floor. Both rooms were airy, bright, spacious and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was plentiful and replenished every day - the best hard boiled eggs I have ever had. Beautiful, peaceful garden. We'll return.

Pam & Richard, Manchester

Dear John and Carole. Thankyou for another happy stay in your lovely Garden suite. We really appreciate the peace and the beautiful views here. We would also like to thankyou for some really good breakfasts, many of which we have eaten at the garden table and some useful ideas for places to visit. See you again next year.

Lu, Bognor Regis

Good quality, comfortable room (garden suite). Reasonably modern facilities. Fridge was large enough to stock picnic food in so very handy. Generous continental breakfast as advertised. Lovely garden space available for use together with off-street parking. Easy walking distance to the cove, with a variety of nearby hotels, cafes and visitor centre. We had a lovely 3 day stay exploring the area. Carole and John were very hospitable and friendly. Local knowledge and advice very helpful. Would recommend.

Allison, Oxford

We had a wonderful stay at John and Carole's beautiful B&B. It was truly tranquil. The room was beautifully decorated and the garden gorgeously done. They provided more than enough fresh breakfast food and gave some excellent recommendations and were very friendly and hospitable. We are already planning our next visit!

Location

The neighbourhood

You can join the South West Coast Path in five minutes from the house. Lulworth is a tourist hot spot, but the secret is to wait till late afternoon, and venture to the cove when the sun is setting, and the crowds have gone, or early mornings when the fisherman return with their crab. Visit the ghost village of Tyneham (10-minute drive) – in December 1943 the occupants were given a few days’ notice to leave, when it was commandeered by the British Army. Take a picnic, walk among the ruins, read about the lives of those who lived here. Durdle Door (with its rock arch and wild seascapes) is a 40-minute walk.

Local points of interest from John & Carole Bickerton

  • 100 metres from the Coast Path in Lulworth Cove so wander from our door along probably the most stunning part of South West Coastal Path and The World Heritage Jurassic Coastline!
  • Walk east round Lulworth Cove, past the Jurassic Fossil Forrest along to the beautiful secluded Mupe Bay for a quick dip and then on to the lost village of Tyneham.
  • Hike west over the hills to Oswalds and Man'O'War bays with stunning views of the ancient coastline to then watch the sunset through the iconic Durdle Door.
  • Take the tour boat or hire Kayaks from the cove round to Durdle Door and see the Jurrasic coast from a different perspective.
  • Discover The Isle of Purbeck, fireworks at Lulworth Castle, revolutions at Corfe Castle, fossils at Kimmeridge & giant sea monsters at The Etches Collection, relations at Monkey World, guns at the Tank Museum and so much more.
  • After a hard day Lulworth has good pubs, restaurants, cafés and even the fisherman has a shed selling his lobsters, crabs and fish, all within 5-10 minutes walk!
