The Experience

Make yourselves at home in the dining room with antiques, pictures, photographs, china plates and lots of interesting books. Tea and home-baked apple cake or scones are waiting for you, or you can have a nip from the honesty bar; you’ll also find Dorset wine and a friend’s honey to buy. The sun-room overlooking the garden is a good spot for a sundowner before wandering out to dinner.

Breakfast choices are posted on a blackboard and agreed upon the evening before, with vegetarian and vegan options too: homemade granola, Greek yogurt with honey, a Dorset fry-up or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, served in the sun room or garden if you prefer – help yourselves to cushions from the basket.

Take a book to the French day bed under the honeysuckle on balmy days, or visit the Cherries café in the village for good food.

Reviews

You would have to travel far and wide to get a welcome as good as the one you will get from Angela at Quintessential B & B. The cottage is a joy to stay in ….so beautifully furnished with harmonious colour schemes. Spend time in the lovely cottage garden in one of the cosy sitting areas. Everything you could want from the most amazing B & B especially the home cooked food from the Aga!

Rosalind, Stroud

Angela was very welcoming and helpful both before and during the visit. The rooms were clean and the breakfasts large and delicious, with local honey available. We had supper outside in the garden on our first night. Recommended.

Dean, Essex

Fabulous and Cosy BB, very clean , Very friendly owner Angela, lovely Breakfast. All Covid-19 safety details were clearly set out and adhered too. We were really enjoyed our stay and certainly will be back. The local amenities were plentiful, including lovely car park behind the cottage. Awesome Greek Meze and breakfast! Must not miss her cooking!

Derek, Staines-upon-Thames

The Quintessential is aptly named. New owner Angela has wasted no time - refreshing the rooms with delightfully quirky décor and a touch of French Country style. The rooms are impeccable; hugely comfortable double beds, one with a romantic rolled top bath. The garden layout is a similar eclectic mix of lavender, olive and a fig trees and artful sun traps From the cream tea on arrival through to the superb breakfasts this is everything you could possibly ask for from an English Cottage B&B. Regrettably, in these Covid times, we could not hug our new-found friend… but we will return.

Glyn, Littlehampton

Warm welcome, eclectic surroundings, delicious breakfasts and plenty of local info from host, delightful village with plenty of wonderful walks and views everywhere

Location

The neighbourhood

The Swannery is home to 600 mute swans on the site of an 11th-century monastery. The Subtropical Gardens are a short distance away. In the village you'll find a good shop selling pretty much everything including wine, a farm shop and the lovely Cherries cafe. Visit the studio of renowned cameo glass specialist, Helen Millard. Bridport is 20 minutes, Weymouth has a fine beach.

Local points of interest from Angela Hillier

  • St Catherine’s Chapel perched on the hilltop is just twenty minutes walk from the house. The views when you arrive at the top are iconic. The Tropical gardens, Swannery and Chesil Beach are all within walking distance from the cottage.
  • There is a double decker bus that runs from Poole to Lyme Regis along the coastline with commanding views of the Chesil beach along the way. The bus stop Is five mins walk from the cottage.
  • The Island of Portland is not far away with a famous lighthouse and great walks. Lots of water sports and Quiddles cafe great.
  • I recommend The Three Horseshoes pub and The Parlour Restaurant in Burton Bradstock. These are my favourite places for dinner. Rachel’s shepherds hut is now in a field in Little Bredy. An idyllic spot for a fishy lunch. Heaven.
  • Abbotsbury is very convenient for lovely market towns such as Bridport and Dorchester. Both only twenty minutes drive away.
  • Abbotsbury is a beautiful quintessential English village with many amenities such as farm shop, tea rooms and art galleries and it would be easy to park the car up for a couple of days and explore the surroundings by foot or bike.

Introducing

Angela Hillier

Angela, part Welsh, part Greek (what a combination!) has worked in hotels all her life and has travelled widely in the UK. She ran a bistro, cafe and B&B in Somerset before she settled here. She's tireless and fun and infectiously enthusiastic - she also loves looking after people so you're in safe hands.
