The Experience

Tucked in a sheltered hollow beneath the cliff (it’s a fairly steep walk from the car park), this part-thatched inn was built in the 13th century and later extended. If only the walls could talk. Or the nooks and crannies, low-beamed ceilings and huge fireplaces – one was said to be the hideout for a renowned local smuggler.

The sea sparkles, tempting you to the Jurassic Coast and its fossil-rich beaches, while only lapping waves, a burbling stream and circling birds disturb your reverie. On sun-splashed days, dine outside at the plentiful garden tables on classic pub menus, and when the weather isn’t playing ball, escape inside to a soft sofa beside a wood-burner.

Eight bedrooms up a narrow staircase aren’t huge but they’re restful with nautical-inspired colours, chunky throws, plump cushions and recently refreshed en suite bathrooms. It’s a short stroll to the South West Coast Path. Durdle Door, Weymouth and Dorchester are close.

Location

The neighbourhood

Take the circular 2.6-mile walk around Osmington and Osmington Mills, taking in superb views to Weymouth Bay and an ancient smuggler's cottage before hunting for fossils on the rocky beach and watching a waterfall cascade down the moss-covered cliff face. Pretty Weymouth (seven miles) is a delight to explore and iconic Durdle Door (10 miles) is not to be missed.

Local points of interest from Vicky Nesbitt

  • Weymouth harbour (20-minute drive) is at the heart of the Jurassic coast, take a walk along and see the boats coming in to port or take a seat and watch the world go by. The surrounding area offers a host of shops and local attractions.
  • Southwest Jurassic Coast Path – We are lucky to have part of this stunning coastal path right on our doorstep. The Dorset path makes up part of a 630 mile stretch of stunning landscapes and sea views.
