The Experience

Relish an Aga-cooked breakfast as the barges sail by. The garden runs almost into the river where these majestic craft are moored, and the mudflats are a bird watcher’s dream.

Beneath wide skies this extended fisherman’s house looks out at the back to 12th-century St Mary’s where Kim and Gerry ring the Sunday bells. It’s an immaculate B&B in a special location, and each cosy guest room has a river view. A short, steep walk up the hill brings you to the quaint High Street, but the Quay is the nicest part of town.

A two-minute stroll takes you to The Jolly Sailor, a pretty pub with a popular terrace. A ten-minute wander and you’re at the Maldon Smokehouse – great for a bucketful of prawns.

Reviews

Keen sailors Kim and Gerry are as sunny in disposition as the huge sunflowers they grow in the garden. They clearly love hostng guests - serving breakfast straight from the Aga, and saving up tips on things to see and do. The perfect place to stay for a weekend in Maldon, and worth making the trip just to stay here.

32, The Hythe was the best bed and breakfast we have ever stayed at. The rooms, house and gardens were beautifully presented with so much attention to detail. The breakfast was very extensive, extremely fresh and yummy. Kim and Gerry were really lovely hosts, generous with their time and knowledge. The location could not be beaten!!

Jill, Leamington Spa

32 The Hythe is a gem of a B&B. Kim and Gerry are attentive hosts, our room was very comfortable with a fantastic view of the quay and Thames Barges, and the breakfasts are great! There are local walks around Maldon and plenty to explore a little further afield. Kim provided first rate advice on trips out and restaurants. We wanted for nothing!

I arrived Friday afternoon, ready to attend a party the following day, cruising on a vintage barge, boarding opposite 32 The Hythe. I realised I was lucky to find something so close but I couldn’t possible have imagined how amazing it was going to be. The room was charming and comfortable with the usual teas & coffee provided and so much more. Breakfast was wonderful and served in the garden as it was such good weather. I was sad to leave on Sunday, but I certainly recommend a stay there.

This review is overdue given the fabulous 3 nights we spent here. Kim and Gerry are welcoming hosts and have thought of everything. The luxury and comfort of our stay was in the detail. A pair of field glasses for you to bird watch from the bedroom window. Milk in the fridge. "Nice" tea/ground coffee/ hot chocolate for ad hoc drinks plus shortbread in a jar and sweet treats refreshed daily. Q tips in the bathroom, hot water bottles in the wardrobe drawer; it was home away from home. The breakfasts are DELICIOUS - Suffice to say they set the bar very high & I hope to be back.

Location

The neighbourhood

Maldon has a peaceful, friendly charm. The Hythe is a historic quay where vintage sailing barges ply their trade in summer, and the Maldon Mud Race (May) and the Regatta (September) are a local sensation. For good food, try The Queen’s Head along the Quay. On the High Street, check out Mrs Salisbury’s Tea Rooms, and Dante’s Brasserie for gourmet fish and chips.

Introducing

Kim & Gerry Gibbs

Kim and Gerry are experienced and very welcoming hosts. Gerry works in finance; Kim, born and bred in Maldon, used to work for consumer magazines. They bought The Hythe in 2006 as a family home, and later started doing B&B. They are keen sailors - Gerry likes racing - and have their own little boat.
