The Experience
You’ll be entirely able to unbend here: find a pretty little table and chairs outside with pots of sweet herbs where you’ll sit with a sundowner or a morning cup of tea. Walk straight in to a light and bright open-plan space with a kitchen to one side. You’ll find all the basics in the cupboards plus a welcome hamper with local craft beer, jam, bread and lavender tea.
Choose a book (including all of Jane Austen’s works) or a DVD from a good selection and snuggle in when the weather isn’t friendly. Stock up at the monthly farmers’ market in Alton or in Four Marks (four miles), visit Hattingley Valley Wines for perfect sparkling wines and return to cook up a storm, or walk five minutes to the excellent village pub.
Bedrooms spoil with organic cotton sheets, large windows for pretty views over the garden and lane, and painted wooden panels to retain that barn-like feel. This is a paradise for walkers: The Writer’s Way passes the door and you can stroll all the way to the Jane Austen House Museum.

I booked The Hay Barn at Upper Farringdon for 3 nights to meet up with my niece and on another night my oldest girlfriend to celebrate 50 years of friendship. The Hay Barn is very comfortable and quiet. Susannah welcomed me and provided a lovely hamper. We mostly ate in and had everything I needed to cook. Final night we had a great meal in the village pub. We didn’t use the car once and walked from the barn everyday. Susannah had recommended routes. I will be back.

A return visit to a peaceful, relaxing home away from home. The location is perfect for a family break, with lots to explore nearby including the beautiful village and walks from the doorstep. We found the space so well equipped that staying at home and cooking was equally relaxed. The beds are comfy and the rooms have plenty of space to unpack and feel like you're not squeezed in. The bathroom is clean and modern and we loved playing the board games (we left our toys behind accidentally!). Would recommend for families and couples, a countryside getaway perfect for exploring or relaxing.

We (family of 4 adults) enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Hay Barn in Upper Farringdon. The house was clean and well-appointed with all mod cons. It is a very cosy retreat in a beautiful area of Hampshire, right on the Writer's Way. We enjoyed visits to Chawton, Winchester and Selborne, Our hosts were very friendly and we appreciated the welcome hamper with local produce! We also found many tips for places to visit and sighseeing in the documentation and books available at the house. We would certainly recommend staying at the Hay Barn and we are already talking about a return visit. :-)

Location
The neighbourhood
You're on the edge of a pretty village with thatched cottages and an ancient church with one of the oldest yew trees in the UK. Further afield are ancient beech forests with bluebell woods and hedgerows brimming with wildflowers in spring. A climb gives you stunning views over the South Downs. Explore the museum at Gilbert White's house in Selborne then visit the pottery selling lovely hand-thrown stoneware. Hop on the Watercress Line from Alton to New Alresford .
Local points of interest from Susannah Acland
- Set on the edge of The South Downs National Park, on the "Writers Way" (a network of paths and bridleways linking Alton and the surrounding villages) the barn is an ideal base for walkers, with several beautiful walks straight from the front door.
- The Hay Barn sits in the heart of Jane Austen country with the pretty village of Chawton a leisurely half hour walk away through woodland and open fields (or short drive), where the Jane Austen House Museum and Chawton House are located.
- The 18th century naturalist, Gilbert White's Museum (and excellent cafe) in the beautiful village of Selborne, is a short drive away, where more beautiful walks can be found including the stunning "zig zag" path up to the top of Selborne Common.
- The pretty market town of Alresford is a 20 min drive away and for opera fans, we are ideally located for the Grange Festival. The Alresford Watercress Festival takes place in May and the historic Watercress line runs steam train trips to and from Alton.
- Just 10 minutes further down the road is historic Winchester with its beautiful cathedral and a plethora of independent shops.
- Upper Farringdon is a beautiful village, with its ancient church (and Yew Tree which is one of the 10 oldest in the UK), thatched cottages and our excellent pub, The Rose and Crown which serves delicious food and has a pretty and spacious beer garden

Introducing
Susannah Acland
Susannah is an artist and interior designer, her husband a very keen gardener. They have two girls and together they enjoy setting off on foot (with their dog) to discover the natural and architectural treasures of this beautiful slice of the UK. They really enjoy having guests and hope that you'll fall in love with the countryside as much as they have.
We enjoyed a lovely three night stay in the delightful, cosy Hay Barn. We appreciated the appealing decor, the welcome hamper and the location close to Chawton (a lovely walk) and Selborne. Susannah was most helpful with advice on the local area and we had an excellent meal at the village pub (an easy 10 minute walk away, armed with the torches provided).
