The Experience

Four oak-framed cabins sit in a wildflower meadow, framed by the towering mass of the Black Hill, steps away from the cosy 17th-century Bull’s Head inn. Vaulted wood ceilings are flooded with light from picture windows, there are heated floors and fluffy robes in the en suite and a porch with a view for your morning coffee.

Check in at the pub, stopping for a pint by the fire in the flagstoned bar – Wye Valley and Lucky Seven breweries are regulars on the pumps, along with Oliver’s Cider and spirits from Penrhos and Wildjac. Your breakfast box is packed with local treats: Angel Bakery sourdough and homemade butter, preserves and granola.

A walk in the dramatic Black Mountains is a must, or take a drive to Hay-on-Wye, town of books, before heading back for supper at the pub. In summer you might find head chef Mike cooking over fire outdoors, but good, honest cooking using produce from the family farm down the valley is on the menu year-round.

Location

The neighbourhood

The pub stands alone on a winding country road, four cabins dotted in the meadow below. Round off a walk up the towering Black Hill with a pint in the pub garden. At the heart of the Black Mountains, there are plenty of hills to climb. Hay-on-Wye, famed for its literary festival and bookshops, is a 15-minute drive – Hay Castle is great for lunch. Abergavenny train station is 35 mins away.

Local points of interest from Wild by Nature

  • The Black Hill is one of the most beautiful and impressive walks in the Black Mountains. Also known as the Cat’s Back, this route links on to the Offa’s Dyke path on the border of England and Wales with some of the most incredible views over the valley.
  • Hay-on-Wye: With lots of bookshops, this creative little bit of the borderlands is known as the town of books. Well worth a visit with Shepard's ice-cream, The Castle, Fudge shop and so much more.
  • Drover Cycles, Hay on Wye: Hire bikes and have them delivered at the Pub ready for your arrival – what better way to explore the valley.

Introducing

Wild by Nature

Jake, a trained chef, grew up nearby. He and Amie, originally from New Zealand, moved back to the borders after stints in London and a season hosting a chalet together in France. They now head up Wild by Nature – a wedding venue, pop-up restaurant and more recently The Bull's Head. It's a family affair; Jake's brother-in-law Ed runs the family farm where the pub sources much of its produce.
