The Experience

This quaint tin chapel is not what it first seems – the wood-panelled space is packed to the soaring rafters with mid-century vintage furniture; it’s fit for a Hollywood movie set. There’s a games area, part of the main space, with table football, puzzles, board games and books, a huge collection of vinyl records, a piano and squashy velvet sofas to sink into by the woodburner.

Two luxurious doubles float on a mezzanine surrounded by glass balustrades, the shared bathroom has a sunken bath in the old baptismal font. Two more rooms in the quiet annexe are perfect for popping the kids to bed in time for cocktail hour. The vintage kitchen, made from Spitfire offcuts, has everything you need and there’s a charcoal barbecue in the courtyard garden.

Walk to the village pub, or set out over the chalk downs for spectacular views from St Catherine’s Point. The Isle of Wight is famous for its water sports, and for those who prefer to stay dry, head to quirky Ventnor for cafés, galleries and vintage shops.

Location

The neighbourhood

The tin-clad Victorian church building is just outside Chale and has plenty of parking. The friendly local – The Wight Mouse – is a couple of minutes’ walk. You're just a mile from Blackgang Chine, Britain’s first theme park. It’s a 15-minute drive to Ventnor for antiques shops, pubs and supermarkets, and there's an excellent farm shop at Godshill. The train station in Sandown is 20 minutes.

Local points of interest from Harriet Hunter

  • The Coastal Path is a 5-minute stroll away. Here there are breathtaking westerly views across open sea and dramatic cliffs—a perfect place for a morning walk or sunset stroll. While there’s no beach access here, the scenery more than makes up for it.
  • 3-minute stroll, you’ll find the Wight Mouse Inn. Warm, welcoming and full of character, it’s a perfect spot to unwind after a day exploring. Child and dog-friendly, with hearty food, local ales and a relaxed garden where you can watch the sunset.
  • The Isle of Wight is blessed with some of the UK’s best beaches, each with its own charm. From wide, sandy stretches perfect for sunbathing and sandcastles to secluded coves and rocky shores full of fascinating rockpools, there’s a beach for every mood.
  • The Isle of Wight is a hidden gem for food lovers, with a thriving culinary scene that punches well above its weight. From beachside cafés to award-winning restaurants, the island celebrates fresh, local produce. See my website for recommendations.
  • Watersports are available nearby: paddleboarding, wingfoiling, coasteering, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and great surfing, there’s no shortage of adventure. The island’s sheltered bays and open waters offer something for all skill levels.
