The Experience
Since 1561, generations of Cholmeleys have managed the Easton estate in the rolling countryside of the Lincolnshire/Rutland borders, and in 2001 work began to restore the 12 acres of ‘lost’ gardens which originally surrounded the manor house. You stay in the lodge: a light, bright and peaceful space with good furniture, pictures and books, a downstairs sitting room painted cornflower blue and a well-planned kitchen; you’ll feel very happy staying indoors, perhaps just reading or recharging your batteries, but garden lovers will be too excited to stay put – as evening falls and the visitors leave, the gardens are yours to wander at will. Find walled gardens in the Tudor style, a turf maze, a yew tunnel and grand trees. Return to sleep peacefully in a restful, view-filled bedroom up a narrow spiral staircase, splash about happily in a roomy bathroom with wainscoted walls. You’re just under one miles from the A1 (depending on the wind direction you may hear a slight hum in the gardens) but all is quiet and rural-feeling inside. Walk the three miles to the estate pub for lunch or supper, amble around Rutland Water for birdwatching. Lovely.

The gatehouse was a delightful place for two. Impeccable attention to detail, couldn't fault. We loved having the grounds to wander round when not open to the public, they have been beautifully restored ....a labour of love!

This 2 night stay was a birthday present for myself and my other half. We were very impressed with this small but beautiful gatehouse, from the lovely, comfortable bed and the spotlessly clean bathroom to the well equipped kitchen. Not to mention the wine, chocolate cake, sloe gin, bread etc etc that were there for us to enjoy. It was lovely to have the gardens to ourselves and have a chat to the gardeners. I can highly recommend a stay here - you will not be disappointed. Our only low spot was the weather, sadly nothing we could do about that.

The lodge is absolutely beautiful and the out of hours access to the gardens was a real treat. We were beautifully looked after and I could not recommend this as a place to stay highly enough.

Without doubt the best self-catering holiday cottage we have had in the UK. The attention to detail was excellent - a beautifully designed interior with everything you could possibly need. The welcome pack, complete with gluten free cake, was much appreciated. Easton is well situated for historic houses and landscapes - Burghley, Belvoir and Grimsthorpe are all close by. Stamford has places to eat but we enjoyed the Cholmley Arms and the Olive Branch. Being able to explore the lovely gardens at Easton in the evening when everyone had gone home was a real treat. Thoroughly recommended.

The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Sir Fred Cholmeley
- The Gatehouse Lodge is in Easton Walled Gardens, the gardens of the former Easton Hall which have been lovingly brought back to life by the Cholmeley family. Guests have free, unlimited access to the Gardens during their stay.
- The Lodge is on the Easton Estate, owned by the Cholmeley Family since 1561. The Estate's pub, the Cholmeley Arms, is just over 3 miles away and serves the most delicious food.

- We are an easy drive from many parts of the UK - just over 100 miles from each of London, Cheltenham, Manchester and York.
- FD Roosevelt (32nd President of the United States) and his wife, Eleanor, spent their honeymoon at Easton Hall, as guests of the Cholmeley Family.
- Sir Isaac Newton was born just across the road at Woolsthorpe Manor, now a National Trust property and open to the public.

Introducing
Sir Fred Cholmeley
Generations of Cholmeleys have managed The Easton Estate in Lincolnshire since 1561. Sir Fred and his wife, keen to introduce guests to the beauty and tranquillity of country life, have been running their Walled Gardens as a visitor attraction since the early 2000s. They live on The Easton Estate, and have holidayed in their Norfolk Yellow House since 2004 too.
We were welcomed very warmly and given a tour of the cottage. The cottage had an instruction folder for all of the appliances. A perfect combination of cosiness and modern features makes this cottage a real gem. Having the gardens all to ourselves was an absolute delight. We had the best tea and scones at the tea room. Everyone at the garden were warm and friendly. The location is fantastic as it is close to Belton House and Burghley House. We will definately be visiting again.
