The Experience

A bright, welcoming open-plan space overlooking the courtyard. Friendly owners Dee and Charles who live in the farmhouse have transformed their farm buildings into comfortable places to stay, with an emphasis on sustainability.

Your open plan living area is bright and light with a wood-burner for chilly evenings and you can stock up at the farm shop on Charles’ rare breed Dexter beef, excellent pork sausages and eggs.

Wander the farm, stride into the hills, stroll to the pub, organise fishing, visit Hadrian’s Wall. There’s a shared, well organised laundry and drying room for muddy kit.

Location

The neighbourhood

Feel free to explore the farm’s 37 acres – just close all gates after you to keep dogs, hens, horses and cows where they’re meant to be! Dee and Charles can suggest walks long and short depending on your stamina: the route of Hadrian’s Wall passes within 2 miles. Shop in the old market town of Hexham 8 miles away: 40 minutes’ drive gets you to Carlisle or Newcastle. When hunger strikes you’re a brief totter from the well-regarded Barrasford Arms.

Local points of interest from Charles & Dee McGowan

  • We farm Dexter cattle, producing delicious mature beef, some of which we supply to The Feathers Inn (Another Sawday's gem) and some of which you can buy in the farm shop.
  • There are several walks from Southlands detailed in our welcome book as well as lots of local places and activities for you to go and do, which we will email you when you book.
  • We have extensive gardens with places to explore or sit and relax.
  • You can walk across out fields to the pub.
  • We are in the Northumberland International dark sky park.
  • Hexham town was in top 50 Sunday Times towns to live with its majestic Abbey and cozy pubs and the picturesque town of Corbridge with boutique shops.

Introducing

Charles & Dee McGowan

Dee is an artist with a studio on the property. She's also a keen gardener, florist (she runs courses) and cook. As well as rearing rare breed Dexter cattle, Charles restores classic cars and is an artist blacksmith - you'll find many examples of his work dotted about the gardens. He's also a keen fisherman and can arrange superb fly fishing for guests. They're keen on saving the planet too.
