The Experience

Proper English country house style prances across polished antiques, gilded paintings and pretty swathes of fabric. Breakfast is pretty splendid too: full English with local sausages, bacon and black pudding, smoked salmon and kippers from the famous smokehouse in Craster – everything is sourced as locally as possible. You eat in the dining room at a rather grand table with lovely views over the garden and you can have supper here too by arrangement.

The bedrooms (the best is on the ground floor with its own seating area and doors to the garden) are light and spacious and very comfortable. All have TVs, tea trays with biscuits and chocolates and super views over the garden. Wander this at will to find little seating areas and tables – in good weather you may have breakfast outdoors.

There is a café in the village for tea and cake, or lunch, and a very pretty church to explore – St Michael and All Angels. Walks are sublime.

We stayed with Jane and Adrian for two nights on our way back from a holiday in The Isle of Skye. We received a warm welcome despite having been delayed on our journey and arriving very late! This was a great place to stay - very comfortable and with a great breakfast. The location is ideal for exploring the surrounding Northumberland countryside and we hope to return. Jane and Adrian have a characterful eighteenth century house set in two acres of gardens on the edge of the Northumberland National park. They are extremely welcoming and informative about the local geography, sites and activities. Jane cooked us an excellent meal at a very modest price. We can recommend Ingram House for a short stay or for a week as we did without reserve.

Location

The neighbourhood

Ingram House sits on the edge of the hamlet, surrounded by woods, fields and hills. You're at the entrance to the Ingram Valley and the Northumberland National Park for incredible stargazing – you need to book ahead for Kielder. The nearest shop is in Powburn (two miles) and The Bosk at Branton serves good food. Nine to 15 miles away are Alnwick for the castle and bookshop, Alnmouth and Bamburgh beach.

Local points of interest from Jane & Adrian Levien

  • You can walk straight from the door into the Cheviot Hill and discover Iron Age Hill Forts, amazing wild life and breathtaking views.
  • We are a 40 minutes drive from the Coast which boasts some of the best beaches in England.
  • Discover some of the 82 castles in Northumberland, including Bamburgh, Alnwick, Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, and Chillingham - where you will find the only herd of wild cattle in the country.
  • A trip to Lindisfarne is a must when the tide permits. Discover the Castle, Gertrude Jekyll’s garden, the Abbey and church and museum. Or take a boat from Seahouses to the Farne Islands to see puffins and seals.
  • Take a Farm Safari into the hills - a 3 hour guided trip in a vehicle around the Farm plus a picnic. If this is something you would like to do we can arrange it for you.
  • Head North to Ford and Etal to visit Ford Village where you will find the Old School House with murals painted by Lady Waterford and a history of life in the Castle. Then take a trip up a single track railway in a steam train to Etal.

Introducing

Jane & Adrian Levien

Jane (who has Northumbrian roots) and Adrian moved here from London when their children were young. They ran a catering business doing directors' lunches in the city, drinks parties and other things. They started their B&B business when their children had grown up and left home. Jane is an excellent cook and a very friendly host. They have two dogs and a cat.
