The Experience

The open-plan space is large and airy, light floods in from floor-to-ceiling windows and there are plenty of books and information about the farm, best read in front of the merry wood-burner. An air source heat pump and underfloor heating keep you extra cosy. On the farm you can visit the community orchard, wander a wildflower meadow, follow a farm trail and discover a pond with a bird hide – nature lovers will be happy here.

The bedroom, separated by folding doors, has a sumptuous hand-crafted four-poster and chunky wooden furniture, then a spacious bathroom with a large shower. It’s a massive space for two but you share it with several nonchalant teddy bears. Cook up a storm in the sleek kitchen and find a welcome hamper of local goodies including home-baked apple cake.

French doors lead to an east-facing grassy area with table and chairs for morning tea; round the front is another for sunsets. Wonderful Northumberland awaits.

Location

The neighbourhood

Lowick is three miles away for The Black Bull pub. Walks in every direction are stunning, through dappled woodland onto springy moors with huge boulders. Or head to the Cheviot Hills for some uphill slogs with wonderful views from the summits. The coast is half an hour away for white sandy beaches, and there are stately homes and gardens nearby, fantastic birdlife, gurgling rivers – it's a grand spot.

Local points of interest from Karen Burn

  • Our farm trail winds through beautiful countryside, past woodlands and fields of organic wildflowers, to a pond with dipping platform. We’ve planted a community orchard of heritage trees and manage species rich meadows with grazing native cattle and sheep.
  • Archaeologists have explored the remains of an amazing hidden Iron Age settlement on the farm. In 2024 we are working with Natural England to build an interpretation area in the footprint of a roundhouse to describe the secrets of this long-buried site.
  • Visit the island of Lindisfarne, once an important centre of English Christianity. In the stillness of evening voices of seals resting on sand banks drift across the water to the island. A castle rises out of the rock, once guarding the harbour entrance.
  • Northumberland’s beautiful sandy beaches are overlooked by spectacular castles. Enjoy an evening excursion to Bamburgh where the great castle illuminates the sparkling sand, whilst out at sea island lights glint and glimmer – an enchanting experience.
  • The wild Cheviot Hills offer breath-taking views of untamed moorland. Walks starting in beautiful valleys with tumbling clear streams, quickly rise onto bracken covered slopes grazed by native sheep. Pause by a sun-warmed wall and enjoy the wildness.
  • It’s a lovely walk to Cuthbert’s Cave where the monks carrying St Cuthbert’s remains are said to have rested beneath the rocky outcrop. Nestled in the shade of woodland along a track lined with daffodils, the cave offers peace and a place of wonder.

Introducing

Karen Burn

Tom and Karen place the preservation of their beautiful environment at the heart of what they do. They raise organic sheep and traditional native cattle on their farm and are determined to make everything run in as eco-friendly a way as possible, as well as giving a little back to the community: they’ve made a heritage orchard for the local village and worked with community groups on all sorts of green projects. Tom’s the third generation to live at Hunting Hall and Karen holidayed here as a child, so they’ve got lots of good tips about where to go and what to see.
