The Experience
You enter a spacious and beautifully decorated seating area – very much an informal inn rather than a hotel. The feel is country house with lovely old rugs on a stone tiled floor, stripped back beams and a vibrant range of original art. Logs blaze in the stone fireplace, there’s plenty of comfortable seating and a merry mix of locals and visitors enjoying the excellent hand-pumped ales and locally sourced food.
Bedrooms, seven in the inn and five in the Coach House, are decorated in individual style (by Octavia Dickinson no less) with rich, thick fabrics, soft woollen blankets and eclectic art. Antique furniture glows and bathrooms have Bamford soaps and lotions. Modern British cooking starts with the freshest seasonal ingredients and much is homegrown or reared at Hodnet Hall Gardens and the estate farms. You’ll eat very well.
On balmy days you can enjoy a pint on the terrace with its café-style tables and pretty planters.

Location
The neighbourhood
The name Hodnet derives from the old Welsh for peaceful valley and there is much history to uncover at the inn and in the village. Walks start from the door and you'll find plenty of information/guides at the inn. Garden lovers can start at Hodnet Hall then visit Woollerton Old Hall Gardens for an outstanding example of an English garden – a tea room too. Ironbridge Gorge and Museums are nearby.
I had a really lovely stay at the Bear Inn. The food here is fantastic, everything on the menu is seasonal and celebrates the best local ingredients – the goats cheese gnocchi I had for dinner on my first evening there was absolutely delicious. My bedroom was beautifully designed and very comfortable, it was the perfect place to return to after a day out walking in the Shropshire Hills or exploring Ironbridge. All the staff were so friendly and helpful too, thank you for welcoming me!
