The Experience

Matt and Juliet have breathed new life into this attractive old house close to the Welsh border. They love welcoming guests and your stay starts with a home-baked something and hot drinks – and a tour of the cellar if you’d like with its salting tables and the remains of huge old cider barrels.

Bedrooms in airy vaulted spaces come with sofas and flowers. Wake for imaginative breakfasts: homemade bread, rhubarb and ginger jam, buckwheat granola and apple juice, porridge with cream and whisky, spicy Mexican beans on toast, Ludlow sausages, poached home-laid eggs with avocado on sourdough topped with tomato, garlic and chilli…

Join the Heart of Wales Line Trail, have a foodie day in Ludlow, catch the evening sun from a pretty garden spot, finish off with a Moroccan rose oil bath before bed.

Reviews

New life has been breathed into this handsome Georgian house by London escapees Matt and Juliet. A perfect blend of the old and the new will delight lovers of understated style and design. The art is special too. A superbly sourced breakfast with some great twists will fortify you for some superb walking and exploring. Shropshire is a hidden gem with much to discover, a true taste of the good life.

Our weekend stay at Bucknell was an absolute delight! From Friday to Sunday, the hosts showered us with invaluable local tips and served up the most amazing breakfast spread each morning. Freshly baked cookies greeted us daily, adding to the charm of this hidden gem in bucknell. The cozy accommodations were spotlessly clean and incredibly comfortable. Massive thanks to the hosts for their hospitality. This stay was for sure one of our top destinations and I highly recommend it to anyone considering a visit!

Liam, Walsall

We stayed here in March 2023. Located in a lovely little village and the directions were quite straight forward to follow. Upon arrival, Matt greeted us and gave us an overview of the facilities and how to access the room. The room was in immaculate condition, the bathroom deserves a special mention! Tea and coffee were present in addition to some local guides and home made cakes in a little box which was a nice touch. The breakfast was very tasty with cooked or cereal/bread options with locally sourced products. Our hosts were very welcoming and we could not recommend this highly enough!

Helen, Derby

Perfect peaceful & relaxing stay. Welcoming & friendly hosts. The accommodation was first class with thoughtful quality touches throughout. The home-made treats & breakfast were excellent. We will return without a doubt.

Alastair, Bristol

We spent a night at the Hall and hugely enjoyed it. The owners have so constructed it all that you can consider yourself almost ‘self-contained’, but with no sitting room etc. You ‘go through’ to breakfast the next morning and eat in splendid style. The décor is modern, surprisingly and engagingly so, and the main house is full of brave dark colours and interesting features. We’d gladly go again.

Location

The neighbourhood

Bucknell is at the foot of the Shropshire Hills in an AONB. The Grade II listed house is in the middle of the village off a no-through road, surrounded by hills and woodland; there are lots of walks including the Heart of Wales Line Trail. It has two pubs, a quirky multi-function shop and a railway station. Knighton is five minutes west - hop on the train or walk the trail (nine miles). Ludlow and Presteigne are a 20-minute drive. Closest restaurant to try: Wild Thyme in Presteigne or head to foodie Ludlow (both about a 20-minute drive). Try The Oak at Wigmore (12 minutes) or the renowned Riverside Inn in Aymestrey (slightly further).

Local points of interest from Matthew Bellamy

  • Go on a gentle circular 1¾ mile walk up Bucknell Hill, with fine views of the village and surrounding woodland. Or catch a train on the Heart of Wales line to Knighton and take a stunning 9½ mile hilltop walk back to Bucknell.
  • Visit one of many nearby National Trust or English Heritage properties: Croft Castle, Stokesay Castle, The Weir Garden, Berrington Hall, Powis Castle. Or take a walk in National Trust managed Carding Mill Valley or Wenlock Edge.
  • Explore the nearby medieval market town of Ludlow which has nearly 500 listed buildings. Visit the hill top castle and have a bite to eat at CSONS in the Green Cafe, by the river Teme.
  • Enjoy a day out at the wonderful Bryan’s Ground, three acres of intimate garden rooms and arboretum surrounding an arts and crafts house. If you have time, pop over to nearby border town, Presteigne.
  • Take a walk along part of the newly opened Heart of Wales Line Trail, which traces the scenic Heart of Wales railway line from Shrewsbury to Swansea. The Hall is a five minute walk away from Bucknell Station, on the railway Line.
  • Visit Hampton Court Castle in North Herefordshire. Get lost in the maze, discover a secret passage behind a waterfall and enjoy the beautiful gardens. Return to Bucknell via the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre near Kington.

Introducing

Matthew Bellamy

The Hall is Juliet and Matt's family home and they live here with their two daughters, two cats and some chickens. They moved from London in 2013 because they love the beauty and drama of the relatively undiscovered Shropshire landscape. They enjoy good food and cooking and spending time outdoors, usually on foot or bike. Matt is an artist and produces limited edition prints, some of which are on display in the B&B rooms. They’re happy to advise on walking, cycling and sightseeing and love chatting to guests and making sure they leave with happy memories of their stay in Shropshire and with them.
