The Experience

Watchet was a sleepy harbour town, now its making a name for itself as the hub of an inspiring social enterprise – East Quay – which sits right on the harbour with the West Somerset Railway line running directly behind it. Object Exchange does exactly what it says on the tin: each piece has a label attached describing the significance to the previous owner and you’re encouraged to take one and replace it with your own story.

It’s a fun, colourful, imaginative space, the bedroom is on a mezzanine level with organic cotton sheets and its own private balcony for stunning sunsets looking over the harbour and out to sea. A basic kitchen is fine for rustling up something simple but the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and supper with homemade cakes at tea time and everything locally sourced.

Join in with events on site, stride the Quantock Hills or through the Exmoor National Park, sit on the harbour in the evening with a pint.

This place is one of our Sawday’s Community Champions – not-for-profit organisations receiving subsidised Sawday’s membership as recognition for their support of causes and communities.

Visit and let your creativity and imagination run wild. The pods are as inspiring as the artists who work around them.

Location

The neighbourhood

This is an interesting town, sitting at the mouth of the Washford River on Bridgwater Bay, part of the Bristol Channel, and on the edge of Exmoor National Park. Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner was written here and is commemorated by a statue on the harbourside. You'll find a market every Wednesday, a good deli, several pubs, crabbing on the harbour, local events.

Local points of interest from Rebecca Tomkinson

  • Watchet is a lively coastal town full of history, beautiful quirky buildings, and stunning scenery. From markets and music festivals to steam trains, carnivals, and fireworks, Watchet is brimming with exciting events all year round!
  • East Quay is an arts centre of galleries, local artists' studios, an ethical shop, and cafe/restaurant. We frequently host a variety of events and workshops, so please make sure to check the 'What's On' page of our website!
  • East Quay is only a ten-minute walk from two different beaches, one of which is perfect for rock pooling and fossil hunting. (Visitors often unearth some of the earliest fossil ammonites recorded in Britain!)
