The Experience

You’re near to the pretty old farmhouse where Luke’s family live and next to a magnificent Somerset cider barn, but once inside you’ll feel very independent. Your private terrace overlooks nobody and has a covered eating area with a big wooden table, some colourful pots and neatly clipped hedges. Then there’s a large paddock, all yours, for games or picnics under the shade of the fruit trees – apple, cherry and crabapple – gorgeous in spring.

On chilly days, underfloor heating and an electric wood-burner will keep you cosy and there’s plenty of comfy seating for watching a film, reading a book or playing games. Cooking is sociable in the open-plan space and there’s another big table in the kitchen area. You’ll find all the basics plus biscuits and if you prefer not to do your own breakfast, Celia can drop off a continental with fresh croissants.

Walk to a good pub, join a farm footpath or just settle in and unwind.

Reviews

A restful place for grown ups or those with older children in a great position for exploring the Somerset Levels, discovering some great National Trust houses and gardens, but also within easy reach of the Jurassic Coast.

Karen, Hastings

Charming cottage that was perfect for our stay. The hosts were warm and friendly and directed us to great pubs and landmarks. Montacute House is a must! Thank you for a great stay.

Yvonne

We had a great stay Luke, despite the rain! Our friends from the USA loved the cottage. Best equipped kitchen ever and we stay in cottages three times a year, so we are seasoned cottagers!

Jill, Brackley

We had a very happy and comfortable stay in the Tallet (a.light and sunny barn conversion)for New Year .The kitchen had all we needed to cook and an en-suite bathroom each was appreciated. The location is ideal for country walks, good pub lunches and visiting NT houses like Montacute. We will return.

Kay, Isle Of Wight

Loved the Tallet. Very clean, peaceful, lovely walks nearby. Everything you need is catered for including corkscrews ! Plenty of space and 3 bathrooms so lots of facilities for families or as we did, sharing with friends. Thank you to Celia and Henry for lovely hosting.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are plenty of circular walks around the farm and you can join the Leyland or Parrett Trail. You can walk all the way to Montacute House, a beautiful National Trust house and garden. Visit Thorne, the next village, for car-free cycling. There's a farmshop at Brimsmore (1.5 miles) plus a garden centre. The Devonshire Arms is six miles for excellent food.

Local points of interest from Celia Simon

  • There are National Trust properties aplenty within a 30 minute drive of The Tallet: Montacute House, Tintinhull House, Barrington Court, Lytes Cary Manor and Hadspen House newly renovated as The Newt is certainly worth a visit for its gardens and grounds.
  • The historic town of Glastonbury, famous for its iconic Tor is only a 30 minute drive away. Whilst there, visit Clarks Village for some retail therapy or drive on to Cheddar Gorge for its impressive cliff faces and caves.
  • Visit the Somerset Levels, ideal for bird watching particularly the starling murmurations in the Autumn and visit the numerous craft centres that specialise in willow creations.
  • The famous Jurassic coastline is just 25 miles south of The Tallet. Enjoy a day fossil hunting, walk the south west coast path or take in a boat trip to do a spot of mackerel fishing. Choose your preference of beach from Lulworth Cove to Lyme Regis.
  • The Tallet is equidistant between the fabulous cities of Bath, Bristol and Exeter. Visit their historical attractions including the Roman Baths and The Royal Crescent in Bath, the cathedral of Exeter and the incredible engineering of Brunel in Bristol.
  • The Tallet is part of Home Farm, the home of the School in a Bag charity. Learn more about their life changing work, set up in the wake of losing my son in the Indian Ocean Tsunami and pack your own SchoolBag for a deserving child around the world.

Introducing

Celia Simon

You'll be met by charming Celia. The farm has been in the family for many generations, first as a mixed farm, then beef cattle, and now they rent out the fields to a local farmer. Celia's son Luke runs a charity called School in a Bag which provides the tools for children who would otherwise have no opportunity for an education. They are active in 45 countries across the world.
