The Experience
This traditional Suffolk cottage is believed to have been built in 1650 as a smithy and extended in the 1870s and 1970s; the original layout has been opened up without losing its snug feel. Liz and Paul will leave you a welcome treat and, as they stay here often, you’ll find all the necessary basics too.
Choose a book and settle in a sofa in front of the the wood-burner in the huge old fireplace. One bedroom overlooks an enclosed little garden leading off from the kitchen, and there’s a shaded loggia for eating outdoors.
Find several pubs nearby, and within half an hour’s drive along the coast there are Southwold, Walberswick, Aldeburgh, Snape Maltings with its world-renowned concert hall, Dunwich and Orford – all with pubs and restaurants offering excellent food and ales. Visit the internationally important and beautiful Minsmere nature reserve.

Had a great stay, cottage is well provisioned with kit and equipment. The location is excellent, there are walks out the front door and while the court yard garden is enough to let the dog out in the morning, its only 50 yards up the track to get onto fields. Coast is not far away and lots of good pubs, delis and shops in the area.

The Old Post Box is a beautiful hidden gem in the village of Holton. It has been sympathetically restored retaining lots of period features including original beams and a log burning stove. The modern day conveniences have been thoughtfully added and the rooms well-proportioned. The whole cottage was immaculate throughout. There was ample parking just a few seconds away. Lots of useful extras were provided like umbrellas (luckily not needed), herbs/spices, cooking oil etc. The garden is just enchanting. Bliss...

We had a wonderful stay at the Old Post Box. The cottage is extremely comfortable and equipped with everything you need. Liz also provided helpful information about the surrounding area with tips on eating out, walks, and the best beaches. We hope to return again very soon, thank you Liz for a wonderful stay!

Location
The neighbourhood
Holton has the feel of a traditional Suffolk village, though these days it’s linked to Halesworth, a small town with a medieval main street and independent shops selling antiques, gifts, and clothes, as well as a proper butchers and grocers; a farm shop is only two minutes' walk from the cottage. The Angel in Halesworth offers pub food and The Wenhaston Star is a good drinking pub.
Local points of interest from Liz & Paul
- Covehithe beach is a beautiful and quiet sandy beach just 10 miles away
- Walberswick has not one but three fab pubs for food and drink - The Bell, The Anchor and the Harbour Inn
- Holton's Farm Shop and Garden Centre is a few minutes walk from the cottage, and sells fabulous homemade cakes, as well as frozen pastries and pies and the usual milk, veg, eggs and more
- There is much wildlife to be spotted - in the nature reserves of Minsmere, Benacre and Dunwich Heath, around the marshes of Blythburgh and even in our garden where we have a resident Tawny Owl!
- You are just 15 mins drive from Southwold. En route, why not stop at Old Hall which offers nature walks, a cafe, a children's playground and even a maize maze.
- Vintage furniture lovers are spoilt for choice. Check out Yoxford Antiques Centre and Marlesford Mill. Early birds should make their way to the Friday Street car boot on Sunday morning. Check out our blog for more details

Introducing
Liz & Paul
Liz and Paul began to know Suffolk from visiting friends, and eventually decided to buy their own house here. They live for much of their time in London – Liz works in higher education and Paul works for a small dog food manufacturer, having previously owned a pet shop – but escape to the house whenever they can, and want the cottage to be loved and lived in when they're not there.
We really appreciated having this lovely cottage as our holiday home. It's clearly well cared for and a pleasure to spend time in...comfy beds and sofas and a gorgeous garden and garden room. We enjoyed glorious weather in August but can imagine this house also working well in Autumn or Winter with its big wood burner and cosy feel. Close to wonderful Warbleswick which has a beach, great deli, good pubs and walks...perfect.
