The Experience

A pretty village, a charming cottage; you’ll sleep soundly in what was once the old forge. Step through the grand oak door into a light and airy open-plan kitchen/dining/living room. The beamed ceiling soars above you, ancient chimneys have been cleverly restyled; in an old doorway a wood-burner (with logs on tap) keeps away chills, as does the underfloor heating. Cosy up on plump beige sofas with spotty cushions while the cook beavers away in the kitchen: they’ll be happy with the double oven and all the mod cons. You get extra glasses and crockery, a picnic set, travel cot, fresh flowers, a barbecue. Eat at the oak dining table (or outside in your own little gravelled garden with colourful tubs). Immaculate bedrooms are down a couple of steps: both overlook the well-kept courtyard and the owners home; one has an en suite, there’s an extra bathroom and a handy laundry room. Wander the fruit-laden orchard, find the village playing fields and explore further for gentle walks through woods and farmland. Nearby eateries are plentiful: from pub grub to Michelin stars. Relaxing.

Reviews

Dave & Joyce, Henley-on-Thames

It was great to be back at Anvil Cottage for Badminton 2022. We have been staying at the cottage for the week of Badminton Horse Trials every year since 2012. When we arrive it's just like coming home. Gill and Andrew always make us so welcome and the cottage is perfect for what we need. Anvil Cottage, which is set in a stunning location, is well equipped and is very comfortable. It is the standard by which we judge other cottages that we stay in around the UK. You could not ask for a better, more relaxing, accommodation. We're already looking forward to our week there in 2023!!

I have stayed at Anvil Cottage numerous times, it's a magical place, and I return whenever I can. It's in an idyllic part of Wiltshire, surrounded by wonderful walks and a beautiful country side. Gill and Andrew as just lovely. I consider Anvil my second home and I can not wait to return. I've traveled to many places and this truly is one of the best.

Barry, Brighton

This was our second visit to Anvil Cottage (the first time with family including a 6 month old, the second with friends). We knew from our first visit that the second would be a great success too. Which it was. Family and friends alike loved the place. Superb hospitality from Gillian and Andrew (lovely people and hosts: warm, generous, unobtrusive). Awesome accommodation. Spacious for shared time (and very warm and cosy when needed) and privacy for each couple (own bathrooms). Safe and fun for small children. Donkeys.... Biddestone is a treat. Lovely place to be based (pub, walks, outings).

Alison, Oxford

A blissful short stay in a grey, pandemic midwinter! Anvil Cottage has been beautifully and sympathetically converted, and the interior has been modernised to the highest standards. The main room is very large but warm and light. The bedrooms are beautifully appointed, also the bathrooms. Cooking facilities are excellent (we self-catered as a Covid precaution). We needed an ethernet cable, which our kind hosts lent us. Excellent walking in the area. It would be even better in the spring, summer or autumn, when the courtyard, garden and village green could be appreciated to the full.

Roger, Leatherhead

We have just had a most enjoyable week in Anvil Cottage. Our host Gill made us so welcome and the cottage was exactly as described and in the photos. Excellent accommodation , 2 bed and 2 bathrooms ideal for a family or two couples. In a beautiful quiet setting in the centre of a small unspoilt village with a great local pub. We would certainly recommend this excellent cottage and very central for many good National Trust properties and other worthwhile visits.
