The Experience

Two lovely places to stay. One is tucked next to Rick and Sue’s house, strewn with roses and hollyhocks in summer and with a cosy beamed sitting room (watch your head), warming wood-burner and sheepskin rugs. The other is a little loft conversion reached down a path lined with espaliered apple trees and tubs of flowers – a glass door leads to a contemporary space with an open-plan sitting room/dining room.

Both have smart kitchens with all the kit you need and you’re left a delicious home-baked loaf, homemade marmalade, butter and milk for your first breakfast. With a bit of notice Rick, a trained chef, will cook you a superb three-course supper.

Outdoor spaces for both cottages mean you can eat al fresco on balmy evenings, or simply nip next door to the pub. Walk for miles, cycle quiet roads, visit Staveley Nature Reserve for otters and deer, geese and owls. Return to your sweet retreat and sleep well between crisp white sheets.

Reviews

We had a relaxing break at Little Lodge and found it charming, comfortable, prettily furnished and with a well equipped kitchen . Rick and Sue are lovely hosts and we had an excellent home cooked meal on our first night from ex chef Rick. There is masses to do locally and we packed in York, Fountains Abbey and more then relaxed in the super pub next door and finally to a lovely bed.

Does what it says on the tin! A small charming and beautifully decorated home- perfect for couples with or without dogs. Lots of space and an especially big bathroom- perfect and with a good local pub next door. Highly recommended.

What a Charming place to say! Little lodge is beautifully decorated, very comfortable, well equipped and clean and makes delightful base from which to explore. We appreciated the home-baked bread and marmalade. Thank you Sue and Rick . We've had a lovely stay.

Sara and John

We had a peaceful Easter long weekend in Little Lodge- calm, comfortable and pretty- the cottage is delightful! Pub with marvellous food just steps away. Rick and Sue very welcoming.

Janet, West Yorkshire

Just spent a perfect weekend at Little Lodge in Staveley. The cottage is extremely comfortable and well-equipped. We have friends and family in the area and had spotted the cottages on an earlier visit. The living space and bedroom were well-furnished and the bathroom was outstanding. The location was peaceful and we visited the village pub for drinks and a meal. We would highly recommend this cottage and will be staying again.

Location

The neighbourhood

Staveley is a quiet village with handsome houses and an ancient, interesting church to visit. The Nature Reserve is steps away, so bring binoculars if that's your thing. Newby Hall & Gardens is a ten-minute drive for lovely riverside walks and herbaceous borders (open March to October). Shop for wonderful food at Yolk in Minskip, visit Boroughbridge, or find Roman remains in Aldborough.

Local points of interest from Sue & Rick Hodgson

  • Romantic dinner for two! Chef Rick Hodgson will do all the hard work, all you have to do is open the fridge and turn the oven on! Delicious. All food preferences catered for using seasonal locally sourced ingredients. Let us know at the time of booking.
  • From Staveley you will be spoilt for choice for places to eat out- we name 10 fantastic eating pubs on our website not more than 5 miles away from our doorstep. We recommend the Crown at Roecliffe, which you can walk to on summer evenings from our cottages
  • Staveley Nature Reserve is right on the doorstep- you will see swans, geese and ducks- and on early summer evenings you may also see deer, owls and otters. Enchanting! There a 3 hides on the reserve which provide excellent views across the lakes.
  • No trip is complete for us without our beloved Spaniels - Lucy and George. We are happy to welcome your well behaved dog and will be very pleased to advise you of beautiful dog friendly walks on the doorstep from our cottages,
  • Rick is a British Cycle Coach- we warmly welcome cyclists. Plenty of advice for route-planning and safe storage for bikes. Talk to Rick to plan a great trip. This is perfect cycling country- did you see Le Tour de Yorkshire? From simple to challenging....
  • Staveley is wonderfully located for a real exploration of beautiful North Yorkshire: Charmin Knaresborough, grand spa town of Harrogate, world heritage site at Fountains Abbey, beautiful gardens at Newby Hall, medieval York just half an hour away.

Introducing

Sue & Rick Hodgson

Rick and Sue ran a B&B in Knaresborough for years before buying and converting the two lodges and their own house. Their garden is a triumph. Rick is a classically trained French chef, but also a keen cyclist so he can give maps and advice about local routes. Sue was HR director of Betty's Tea Rooms. They are both charming and there if you need them but otherwise will leave you to your own devices.
