The Experience
A remote and rugged setting with much comfort indoors. Stephanie and Adrian are a creative, well-travelled pair and their house is packed with warmth and interest, including local art for sale. Be welcomed by home cooking, sink into the views from the sun lounge, sleep soundly in luxurious, very quiet bedrooms. Breakfasts with a delicious twist will set you up for a wonderful day walking in the footsteps of the first Scots through this fascinating history-steeped landscape. Explore the beach, sea loch and woods, discover ‘Britain’s most beautiful short cut by sea’ and from there sail to the Corryvreckan. You won’t have to go out again in the evening, as the house is licensed and Stephanie and Adrian’s dinners are well worth arranging too.

Stephanie and Adrian were amazing. They were very clear in their communications prior to us arriving and looked after us extremely well during our stay. Dinner and breakfast were both delicious with a great menu choice and home cooked food that is restaurant quality. Our room was clean and comfortable and the views across Kilmartin Glen were fabulous. There are loads of things to see and do in the local area. Adrian has a wealth of knowledge about it all and is happy to suggest possible options. We recommend you visit Dunadd Hillfort, Nether Largie Standing Stones, South Cairn and Temple Wood.

Stephanie & Adrian, your hospitality, service and friendliness are what makes the Winterton extra special. You made us feel very relaxed and very much at home. Your advice and knowledge of the Crinan & Kilmartin area and its history was an added bonus. The setting of Winterton is beautiful and very tranquil, the sunsets were spectacular. The food was delicious and gave us many ideas to try at home. Tips for other travellers: 1. A walk across the bay to Duntrune Castle and gardens. 2. Historic Kilmartin Glen & Museum. 3. Watching the yachts go through the Crinan Cannal locks.

Lovely. Great chef. Great waiter/advisor of activities. Always cheerful and helpful. Tips for other travellers. Ask Adrian. He is a mine of information on the history of the area, and of places to visit. Restaurants? There seem to be no reasons for these - Winterton is the place to eat. Plenty of cafes for coffee and light snacks in the small communities in the area.

Absolutely wonderful stay with Stephanie and Adrian in their beautiful home. We were made so welcome, our bedroom was extremely comfortable and cosy with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Stephanie will cook an evening meal for you if you wish and it’s an absolute treat, she’s an excellent cook! Adrian is a great host and full of useful local knowledge and history. Our stay was an absolute 10/10, we’re already planning our next visit.

- KILMARTIN GLEN is the most significant area in Scottish history with: CHAMBERED BURIAL CAIRNS, TEMPLE WOOD STONE CIRCLE, award winning KILMARTIN MUSEUM, DUNADD FORT where the Scottish Kings were crowned and ACHNABRECK (finest examples of cup & ring marks)
- On our doorstep is SEA LOCH CRINAN where you can while away the hours beach combing along miles of sand when the tide is out, looking out towards the isles of JURA, SCARBA and MULL and splashing through shallow pools.
- Not far from Winterton is MOINE MHOR nature reserve (one of Britain's finest peat-bog habitats for all kinds of flora and fauna). Walk or cycle along the famous CRINAN CANAL between Crinan and Ardrishaig - 14km in total.
- Many walks and cycle rides cover KNAPDALE FOREST one of which is the famous BEAVER TRAIL. Explore the nature and culture of one of Europe's most evocative and ancient landscapes on a bespoke guided adventure by KAYAK or Foot with 'EXPLORE WILD ARGYLL'
- The fantastic boat trip with 'Venture West' from CRINAN HARBOUR takes you through Europe's second largest tidal whirlpool - the famous CORRYVRECKAN - you might see dolphins and golden eagles on your way. RIDING: Lunga riding stables (20mins).

We had a very enjoyable & relaxing three night stay at Winterton. The location is incredible, with views looking out over Kilmartin Glen, and the bedroom was beautifully furnished. Stephanie and Adrian could not have been more helpful in trying to ensure you have the perfect stay, offering suggestions on places to visit and interesting walks, and Adrian is a fund of knowledge on the area. The breakfasts are superb, and they include options that go beyond the standard B&B fare, which we really appreciated. We really enjoyed exploring this beautiful part of Scotland. We would love to stay again.
