The Experience

Applegarth House was previously the manse for the church next door. Built with Dumfriesshire red sandstone, dating from 1720, it’s been refurbished from top to toe by Andrew and Kirsteen and is now a classic country house with elegance and comfort. Bedrooms have polished antiques, restful colours, candles and flowers, and all you hear is sheep, cows and birdsong – and the Sunday morning bells.

Kirsteen loves to cook, so you’ll have home-baked treats at teatime and homemade marmalade and garden produce with a full Scottish in the morning. Have a wander along the river and through surrounding fields afterwards.

There are three friendly dogs padding about, and you’re welcome to bring yours along – but they can’t sleep in the bedrooms. Walk by or fish the salmon river Annan, explore Eskrigg Nature Reserve, visit Annandale Distillery and take home a “smoulderingly smoky” malt or two. Return to a fire in the drawing room – your hosts have some fascinating old family stories.

A delightful family home with the most welcoming hosts, who will go above and beyond to make your stay pleasant and memorable. A home from home for guests.

A & T, Kishorn

Superb in every way. Kirsteen and Andrew made us most welcome at Applegarth on our arrival: tea and scones were a real treat after a long drive. Our rooms were even better than I'd imagined: a huge comfortable bed and a spacious bathroom with every last little detail considered. Dinner was delicious (Kirsteen is an excellent cook) and we thoroughly enjoyed their company over food. And breakfast was excellent too - thank you Andrew! In short, we left feeling relaxed & nurtured despite having been surrounded by fabulous taste and luxury. Can't wait to find an excuse to stay again.

Jean, West Hill

We had a wonderful stay at this gem of a place so easily accessed from the motorway. Our bedroom and fabulous ensuite were beautifully appointed with a very comfortable bed and all the amenities you could need. We also had a lovely view of the garden and surrounding countryside. Our wonderful hosts provided us with great company and food. Kirsteen cooked a lovely dinner and Andrew served us quite the best cooked breakfast we have ever eaten complete with haggis. We enjoyed several beautiful walks in the lovely countryside. Thoroughly recommended, 5 star rating all round.

David, Beaminster, Dorset

Kirsteen and Andrew were generous to a fault throughout our two night visit in the lovely surroundings of Applegarth. Their patience tested by our extrovert year old spaniel they provided a warm welcome, delicious dinner and breakfasts, comfortable accommodation, lovely garden and wider surroundings and most of all a warm welcome and care. Thank you both!

David and Sarah, Beaminster, Dorset

Kirsteen and Andrew are impeccable hosts and Applegarth is a delight. Their patience tested to limits by our extrovert 12 month old spaniel they nonetheless went to great lengths to ensure that our two night stay was all it should be: comfortable room, delicious dinner and breakfasts, wonderful garden and wider surroundings and, most of all, a warm welcome and care from start to finish. Thank you both!

Location

The neighbourhood

A rural, peaceful spot with birdwatching and fishing on the doorstep. 12th-century motte nearby; four miles from Lochmaben and three from Lockerbie, which has an interesting mix of shops, restaurants, pubs and monthly farmers' market. Moffat is 15 miles; Annan 14, with distilleries, festivals, museum and 53-mile Annandale Way running through, starting at the source of the river Annan.

Local points of interest from Kirsteen & Andrew Michell

  • We have an archaeological monument in our garden, an 11th century ancient Motte which is the remains of the Jardine Clan stronghold. Applegarth is the original seat of the Jardines and generations of the family lie in the small church graveyard next door.
  • The River Annan, one of the best salmon and sea trout rivers in the UK flows below our house. Day fishing permits can be bought. Enjoy lovely countryside and peace and tranquility.
  • See the the magnificent Telemachus submarine bell from World War ll . Telemachus was commanded by Kirsteen's father. Hear its incredible story of being stolen from the family home and how it was finally recovered. This was recounted on BBC Radio 4.
  • The beautiful Annandale Way, a 55 mile walking route between Moffat and Annan, winds past . Enjoy a wide variety of birds - moorland, woodland, field, river and coast and flowers and fauna. Trace Scottish history of this once hard fought over border
  • Devils Porridge Museum is a 5 star Scottish Visitor Attraction. It offers a brilliant interactive experience commemorating HM Factory Gretna, the largest munitions factory in the world during WW1. Full of stories, artefacts and old film. Worth a visit!
  • Take a bespoke tour at Dalton Gin Distillery. Visit the lab and relax at the gin-centric bar. A surprisingly Spanish theme encapsulates this little corner of Scotland with an array of Tapas on offer to accompany the tutored tasting. Truly fascinating!

Introducing

Kirsteen & Andrew Michell

Kirsteen and Andrew like the flow of new people and happily share their home and cottage. Andrew is semi-retired, Kirsteen was previously in hospitality; she’s keen on cooking, including making marmalade and elderflower cordial. They love their dogs, whippet Ozzie and Labradors Phoebe and Milly, and walking them in beautiful Dumfriesshire.
