The Experience

This beautiful Scottish-Georgian family home has no hint of formality, and sociable Willie puts you at your ease. Your sitting and dining rooms connect through a large arch; find gloriously comfy sofas, family pictures, rugs on wooden floors, masses of books and a constant log fire.

Upstairs: good linen, big armchairs, Hungarian goose down, Indian-style kimono robes and windows with the finest views. Wake to delicious breakfasts with homemade granola and locally baked bread, yogurt from Camphill Village Trust, seasonal compotes from the garden, bacon and eggs. Dinner can be booked in advance, all locally sourced, served at one big table and with no menu – just let Willie know if there is anything you don’t like or can’t tolerate.

Stride out for wonderful walks – the countryside is magnificent, beaches fabulous and this is a classified dark sky area – pop outside on clear nights for a good show. A house full of flowers and warmth.

A wonderful overnight stay in a truly welcoming home. Willie is an excellent host with interesting stories, he also does a super breakfast. We even got a full and informative tour of the country home. We look forward to returning sometime soon.

What makes this house really special is Willie. We travelled as a family of six (with 4 more or less grown up kids) and Willie really welcomed us as friends and not as guests. Everyone felt immediately at home. He was open and extremely nice to the younger generation as well as to us. We enjoyed twice a delicious dinner and went out once to a friendly local pub. As this stay was in the middle of our holidays, Willie kindly offered to use his washing machine to do some laundry, which we did. On our last day, he even provided us with a small lunch pack, as he knew we had a longer journey ahead.

Going to Chipperkyle is a wonderful experience. The place is homely, with a faded glory feel. Comfy beds, crisp linen, fluffy towels, and spotless bathrooms. Our dogs loved the masses of grounds, and with the house, you could picture yourself in an Enid Blyton story! The main attraction is Willie, the delightful owner. He gave us such a warm welcome with tea and cake, along with friendly and knowledgeable chat. The breakfast he prepared was scrumptious, and he really could not do enough for all of us. Who wants bland and grey, when Willie and Chipperkyle can provide the complete opposite!

Location

The neighbourhood

Castle Douglas is six miles and Kirkcudbright 15, both with a good range of places to eat – Willie recommends The Selkirk Arms in Kirkcudbright. The area is very arty; galleries, potteries and studios litter the villages and towns, especially Kirkcudbright – home of one of the Glasgow Boys. For gardens visit Broughton House and Logan Botanic Garden. Dumfries for a station is 14.5 miles.

Local points of interest from Willie Dickson

Calm, gentle, stunning countryside, big skies, trilling birdsong, truly dark nights sparkling with stars, tranquil freshwater lochs, sandy coastal beaches, high cliffs, Galloway Hills, lush green farmland; all suffused with warmth of the Gulf Stream.
Red Kite Trail with feeding station. Ken-Dee Marsh Nature Reserve with hides – whooper swans, greylag geese, wigeons, goldeneyes, pintails. Woodlands with red squirrels, great spotted woodpeckers, badgers. Wake up to the dawn chorus.
Southerness Golf course is set on the edge of a remote headland and is virtually unknown by the golfing masses. It measures just over 6,500 yards but with a par of 69. Is this too tough for you? Try Powfoot created by James Braid or 32 other local courses.
Threave Gardens is the best known in this mild, lime-free area but also Broughton House and Cally Gardens nearby. My favourites are Elizabeth MacGregor who produced Anemone 'Wild Swan' Chelsea Plant of Year 2011, Shambellie and Buckland Nursery.

Willie is a thoughtful, witty host who is happy to share his knowledge of the house and its history. As well as feeding you very well he's a mine of information about the area and can easily tailor suggestions about what to do and where to go depending on your interests. You're looked after beautifully by him and his two helpers – the 'dream team'! There is a friendly cat who lives here too.
