The Experience

An 1850 cable hut, quirky and unique, with an unusual layout over two circular single-storey buildings with beautiful gothic-style windows looking out to sea. However gloomy the weather you’ll want to spend time outdoors, sitting in the outdoor bath, gazing into the firepit, sizzling something delicious on the Green Egg, or toddling down to the sea for a bracing dip.

Inside is cosy with underfloor heating, a wood-burner with plenty of logs, a nifty kitchen with a tiny fridge (there’s a big one in an outhouse) and a generous welcome pack. On rainy days you can snuggle in with a smart TV and WiFi or a good book and watch the weather go all dramatic while you stay warm and dry.

You’re sitting on the Dunskey Estate of 2,000 acres so walks from the door will be sublime, or you can join the Southern Upland Way. Bring binoculars for birdwatching; walk into Portpatrick (two miles) for a pub, village store and post office.

Reviews

A glorious location hidden away yet close enough to not feel alone. Surrounded by an estate with secret gardens and endless delights, you could escape it all or join in some of the fun activities offered by the estate. Or visit Port Patrick for more tourist attractions. The outside bath has to be the showstopper though... absolutely amazing!

Location

The neighbourhood

Visit romantic Killantringan Lighthouse or the ruins of old Dunskey Castle perched on the rocks. Walk along stunning unspoilt coastline with views of the Mull of Kintyre and all the way to Ireland on clear days. You may spot seals, lion’s mane jellyfish, basking sharks and many seabirds. Portpatrick has a brewery and a pretty harbour, and Stranraer (eight miles) has bigger shops and places to eat.

Local points of interest from Anne Tristine Nguyen

  • You're not simply staying in a Castle Estate: you are staying on one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. Dunskey Estate boasts two waterfalls, two lochs, and three beaches, with the most magnificent walks along the craggy Scottish coastline.
  • Two lochs nestle into the hills and rhododendron banks. Wander along the glen walk past a rushing waterfall, and a babbling brook, to the two beaches to spot dolphins and seals. Dunskey Golf Course and the picturesque Portpatrick Harbour is 2 minutes away.
