The Experience
Stay here and you feel like you’re on the edge of the world. The restored stone house sits quietly on a wooded headland above Loch Shieldaig, with lovely views for miles around. Herons stalk the shallows, and if you’re lucky you’ll catch a glimpse of a shy otter or a dolphin as you sip coffee on the terrace.
Inside it’s light, peaceful and comfortable. The sitting room has maple floors, a cosy wood-burner, local art, plenty of books and games, and simple windows that frame stunning views. The kitchen – hand-built in the 70s in a now-fashionable Japanese style – is cleverly designed and well stocked: Skye coffee, oats, spices, and Scottish shortbread.
Upstairs, sleep deeply in one of two beautiful bedrooms (a double and a single) with Carron pottery lamps and wildflower prints by the owner’s grandmother on the wall. A comforting bath with views welcomes you from the bracing outdoors, and the only sound is the wind in the trees.

We were so fortunate to find Rhuroin last minute when other plans fell through! What a place! The house is delightful and the location just perfect - views out of the windows constantly changing with the light and the weather. Deer appeared in the back garden while we were doing the dishes. We didn't see any pine martens, but I think the chickens were happy about that. We especially appreciated how well-equipped the house is, including some kitchen essentials we hadn’t thought to bring which allowed us to make pancakes (we didn’t quite get round to baking bread …) We wanted for nothing.

What a beautiful place to be! We loved the house and the views over the loch: the daily dolphin viewings (early morning & early evening), seeing the sea eagle and the otter and having company from the inquisitive seals when we swam. Our favourite thing has been time to slow down when we went out: cycling along the peninsula and off road from Torridon around the peninsula, Applecross Walled Garden, Nanny’s in Shieldaig, kayaking on Loch Shieldaig, the walk along the peninsula from Diabaig, Cuaig beach at low tide, off road ride Applecross to Kenmore. Thanks for your hospitality!

Location
The neighbourhood
The nearest shop is in Shieldaig (10-min drive) where you’ll also find Nanny’s Café for light lunches, The Applecross Inn and Gille Brighde in Diabaig are lovely places to eat. Also recommended is Wee Whistlestop Café in Torridon (10 miles). Great hill walking in the Torridon mountains and the popular Shieldaig peninsula walk. Find local artists at Cold Paradise gallery and crafts at Carron Pottery.
Local points of interest from Iona & Gordon Drysdale
- You will be immersed in nature at Rhuroin - from the resident red squirrels, red deer and pine martens, to the seals singing on the nearby reefs or the birdlife, including sea eagles, herons and oyster catchers.
- The local area is not short of art galleries, like Cold Paradise, a contemporary seasonal gallery in Shieldaig, with which we collaborate to bring pottery and pictures into the house for guests to enjoy, rotating on an occasional basis.
- Drive over the Bealach na Ba (pass of the cattle) to Applecross, the biggest road ascent in the UK, with spectacular views over Kintail, the Isle of Skye, Outer Hebrides and Small Isles. Return on the coast road with views over the Inner Sound.
- Inverewe is a celebrated garden owned by the National Trust. It is located about 1.25 hours drive from Rhuroin. Much closer, the award winning Attadale Gardens offer a blend of history, beauty and artistic expression on the shores of Loch Carron.
- Guests shouldn't miss the Wee Whistlestop Cafe, within the Torridon Community Centre. It focusses on local and seasonal cooking and the regular Fish Friday early evening meal is not to be missed.
- There are so many beautiful and invigorating local walks. We recommend the Shieldaig peninsula walk but if you want a sandy beach, head to Cuaig on the Applecross coast road. Be sure to go at low tide to walk about 1km to the gorgeous expanse of sand.

Introducing
Iona & Gordon Drysdale
Gordon and his wife Iona live a stone’s throw away with their two daughters. Iona is originally from the area and Gordon works in the shellfish industry. They have deep local knowledge and are happy to advise on the best walks and local sights to visit.
My partner and I booked Rhuroin for our honeymoon and had an absolutely wonderful time surrounded by the beautiful highlands. It was the perfectly peaceful and relaxing break needed following all our wedding planning. The kitchen was very well furnished with all the equipment we could need for self-catering and the wood burner gave the cottage a wonderful warmth.
