The Experience

It’s a mile-long drive down a bumpy farm track (with gates to open and close) but you’re rewarded by a timber-clad cottage for two that blends beautifully into the landscape around it.Inside is double-height and open plan with large French windows flooding the room with light; throw them open to look out onto the garden and, beyond that, stupendous views of the Pentland Hills. Jenny leaves you freshly baked scones and all the logs you want for the wood-burner.From here, you can walk the surrounding heather-clad hills and Edinburgh is only ten miles away – regular buses leave from the nearest town, Penicuik, a ten-minute drive away. Get back to fire up the hot tub and watch the stars come out.

Reviews

The Woodshed provides stylishly designed, comfortable and well-equipped accommodation in a beautiful setting. We were able to walk in the Pentland Hills from our doorstep and at the same time be in easy reach of Edinburgh. A perfect place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the Fringe. Worth noting that the Woodshed is located about a 5 minute drive from the main road along a farm track - though the sheep and cows will move to let you past!

This is such a beautiful place to stay, and the perfect place to escape and relax in. It's set in the most idyllic landscape, ideal for hiking and exploring the Pentland Hills. The cottage is furnished beautifully, the perfect balance between modern and cosy. It's lovely and bright, with so many thoughtful touches. We could come back here again and again!

Where do we start? We had originally booked to go in November 2020, but it was postponed twice due to lockdowns! Finally we made it a year later. Such a beautiful location, with views to die for, a lovely drive from the main road. A lot of details have been thought of here - the flask and mugs for long walks, wild flowers, plenty of logs for cosy nights by the fire or in the hot tub and of course a comfy bed after exploring. A lovely little gem close to a beautiful city and countryside. Thanks Claire and Nigel

This is a wonderful house in a magical setting. Everything has been done with such care and thought. Walks from the door and all the peace and tranquillity one could want. Very hard to leave...

We had a wonderful stay in this eco friendly and cosy scandinavian style hideaway. The hot tub was amazing under the stars although the wind did make it challenging to get going, allow yourselves a few hours! Susan and Jenny have bend over backwards to make everything as safe as possible in terms of COVID but were around if there were any problems. They were very helpful in allowing us to charge the electric car which was much appreciated. Everything was finished to a high standard and we had all the comforts we needed. Walking in the Pentlands from the door was lovely.

Beautiful cottage and perfect for a relaxing weekend away. Amazing walks on the doorsteps and a nice wood fired hot tub to come back to.

Our stay at Westside Woodshed was nothing short of magical! The cottage is the perfect blend of minimal Scandinavian style and cozy comfort - it was so warm and inviting, especially after spending our days exploring the Pentland Hills surrounding the farm. We absolutely loved every detail, from the wood fired hot tub and stove to the extra comfy bed where we slept so well all week. The cottage has everything you'll need for your stay, with the most kind and helpful hosts easily reachable if you need them. We can't wait to return to the woodshed next year!

We had the most wonderful weekend in the Westside Woodshed. On the Friday night we watched the sunset from the hills behind (incredible views!). After that Storm Ciara hit so we spent the rest of the weekend nestled up, reading our books, drinking coffee and watching the storm over the mountains. The weather was crazy but we felt so cosy inside the woodshed with the fire lit. The interiors are beautiful and had everything we needed. Jenny was really accommodating and even gave us a lift in her 4x4 when the snow hit! Such a relaxing weekend, went home feeling very refreshed.

An excellent place to stay in an excellent location. A short drive from Edinburgh the Woodshed is the perfect country escape allowing you to enjoy the best city life of the Scottish capital and then follow it with a brisk wilderness walk in the Pentland Hills. The Woodshed itself is a perfect haven among the windy hills. The open plan space feels warm and welcoming, the mezzanine bedroom is cosy and romantic. All the mod cons (from the dishwasher to rain shower) plus the modern rustic decor of the place add up to a luxury experience. The wood fire hot tub is divine.

Olga, London

Such a lovely cottage and beautiful quiet location! Will definitely be back!

Amazing time spent at the Woodshed over Christmas. Everything about our stay was fantastic and we will definitely be returning in the future!

David, Manchester

Had the most wonderful weekend at the Woodshed, the place is stunning and has a quality finish. The views are breathtaking. Only stayed for 2 nights and it wasn’t enough - will definitely return.

Sarah, Nottingham

Beautiful, rustic accommodation perfect for outdoor lovers and those seeking a retreat from day to day life. You can step right out of the door and into the Pentlands. We loved our time there and left feeling relaxed and refreshed. Would not hesitate to recommend it.

AMAZING PLACE!!!! We recently hired all 4 cottages for a week for our family to stay in when we got married in Edinburgh. The whole experience was amazing and so relaxing after the stress of organising a wedding! Susan goes above and beyond to help you feel comfortable while you stay and made everyone feel so welcome. We used the Woodshed as part of our honeymoon - the wood burning fire and hot tub made the experience so unique and special and we didn’t want to leave at all. You’re not just renting a cottage, you’re getting a great rural experience and I honestly can’t recommend it enough.

Local points of interest from Susan & Jenny Cowan

  • The Woodshed is nestled among acres of stunning countryside crisscrossed with walking trails from the doorstep. Take a picnic into the hills, hike to the local pub or just take a moment to watch the wildlife and the world go by from the nearest hilltop.
  • The Woodshed is at the centre of Eastside Farm - our working hill sheep farm. Old-fashioned grasses, herbs & heather illustrate the timeless values of our traditional farming systems. Red grouse, peregrines, ravens, wild hares & badgers are a common sight
  • Edinburgh, Scotland's compact, hilly capital city is jam-packed with great things to do and it's only a 10 mile drive from the Woodshed to the centre! Explore the cobbled streets of George St., Victoria St., Stockbridge, the West End and the Royal Mile.
  • The Lothians and beyond have so much to offer. From rustic country spas, sandy beaches and surfing, to distilleries, skiing and sculpture parks. For Outlander fans the Woodshed offers the perfect base to chase coasts, castles and golden light!
  • Take a day trip to the coast, Sula boat trips will take you out into the Firth of Forth to spot gannets and puffins. Return to shore picking up fresh lobster and chips at the Lobster Shack open in the North Berwick harbour throughout the summer months.
  • Book supper at our farming neighbours on the other side of the Pentlands. The Free Company host magical seasonal suppers with all the ingredients grown on their organic farm. Think firepits, old farm buildings and long rustic tables.
