The Experience
Explore the woods with your dog; go salmon fishing with the ghillie. All you hear on these 1,200 acres are birds, otters, wildfowl, and the estate’s bees feasting on gorse on Bemersyde Hill.
The 1535 Peel Tower is the house’s core (younger wings lie either side). There’s more than enough space for a party of 22. Rooms range from two connecting drawing rooms to a clubby study – christened ‘Whites’ by the last earl – to larder and laundry rooms, a huge room with ping-pong and pool, and much, much more.
Sizzle up sausages down by the river as the sun goes down – there are dark skies for gazers. Book a table for a fine meal in Melrose. This scenic Borders town is five miles away and Burt’s welcomes all. Return to log-burners in grand fireplaces (every room has one), books and beams, and a magnificent, winding stone stair.

We have just had a wonderful relaxing week at Bemersyde. The house was so interesting and cosy that we spent most of our week not venturing very far. We had lots of fun in the games room, playing outside with the dog ( who also had a wonderful time) and walking locally. Margaret was so helpful and I really enjoyed our chats. We are already planning our return visit.

I chose Bemersyde house as accommodation for a large Italian family attending a wedding locally, so they could all stay together. They told me they had a lovely time and very much enjoyed staying at Bemersyde. They appreciated the history and they thought it was a wonderful house and loved grounds. The location is beautiful – with views of the Eildon Hills. The grounds are dreamy and tranquil. They are delightful to walk around. The short walk to the river through the woodlands is such a treat! Margaret the housekeeper is marvellous, so helpful and her vegetable garden and produce are amazing.

We had a house full of friends join us for a long weekend to celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary and we all had the very best of times. The house is full of the most beautiful furniture and art but we all felt right at home and perfectly relaxed and very comfortable. The grounds are just beautiful, and we were treated to wild deer roaming outside the dinning room of an evening. Paths lead from the grounds to lots of lovely spots including Melrose and St. Boswells. The staff could not have been more helpful and the house was ready and spotless on our arrival. We recommend a stay.

Location
The neighbourhood
The landscape is the rolling Scottish Borders, with wonderful views to the Eildon Hills. Discover the tennis court, the woodland play area, and the greenhouse where peaches flourish. The Tweed is a short walk through the woods; consider casting lessons from Ian, estate ghillie for 30 years. St Boswell’s is the closest place to eat (three miles), while Melrose has shops, restaurants, and two National Trust gardens to visit. Walking routes abound.

Introducing
The Team at Bemersyde
Bemersyde has been the home of the Haigs for 800 years; notable ancestors include Field Marshal Haig. The present Earl and his wife inherited in 2010. Margaret, who occupies the lodge and has looked after the house for 30 years, meets, greets and is also available to bake - and makes delicious cheese scones!
Lovely relaxing stay at West Cottage. So peaceful and great place to explore the Borders. Our dog loved her daily paddles in the river. Margaret was really helpful and an extra bonus to be able to buy her preserves and produce.
