The Experience
An early house, probably 18th century, lovingly repaired brick by brick. Enter the dinkiest kitchen/living room with whitewashed walls and a cosy Everhot range humming away – very Thomas Hardy and romantic. Two floral armchairs are just the spot for a read or a chat, and there’s everything you need to cook up a storm.
Up narrow stairs to the bedroom, where an invitingly plump bed, swathed in feather and down and topped with a patchwork quilt is waiting. Find natural oak blocks for bedside tables, hooks for clothes, heavenly views through the leaded windows and a working fire – doze off to the sound of falling embers.
The bathroom is just two paces from the front door: underheated slate floors keep you toasty, the bath is elegant and the towels are thick. The south-facing garden is a delight, with espaliered pears, hawthorn hedging, a little stream and deck chairs. Summer barbecues will be memorable.

- Arriving. It's a noteworthy spot where time really does stand still, you're utterly ensconced in peace and nature with no interference
- The carefully thought-out interiors – simple, elegant, rustic – sheer pleasure, with nothing but beauty to gaze at
- Setting off on footpaths packed with history (bring your dog - there are hot and cold outdoor showers), admiring the wildflowers in spring and early summer, watching the stars come out at night.

Location
The neighbourhood
Spot butterflies and birds while you amble along the old drove ways, deeply embanked, following in the footsteps of medieval feet – very special. Usk is just over two miles and has a good pub, The Nag's Head. One mile further is Morris's Farm Shop for local meats, cheeses, breads. Explore Llanthony Priory, through Capel-y-ffin, then up Hay Bluff for climbs and views.
