The Experience

An attractive kitchen and dining room with a rustic terracotta tiled floor, exposed sandstone walls and all the equipment you need to cook. You also get a welcome bottle of wine produced by a neighbour and a basket of local treats. Open the full height folding doors and eat outside at a large table with stunning views over the countryside.

If you’re staying as part of a group who are in the château then you have use of the swimming pool, but if not there’s beautiful wild swimming in Lac de Gurson just a ten-minute cycle away or in the river Dordogne at several spots. Wander the gardens to pick your own fruit and asparagus in season, or walk through vineyards to St-Martin-de-Gurson.

Up the stairs to a good-sized bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and room for extra bods. Views from here are over vineyards, fields of sunflowers and the ruins of Château de Gurson. Watch the sun rise over the valley.

Reviews

We had a lovely week at Le Chalet. Beautiful location, grounds, and house with a well equipped kitchen

Lucy, London

This place was astonishing and we would return in a heartbeat. The chalet is in a wonderful, picturesque location, right next to the chateau. The accommodation was very comfortable and well equipped, with a place to sit out under the dappled shade of the blossom. There's plenty to see and do in the surrounding areas. There were some good walking trails and we enjoyed the sounds of frogs croaking in the nearby ponds. We visited vineyards, bakeries, artisan markets and the local 'beach' area.

Ros, Bath, UK

Le Chalet has been sympathetically converted from a working vineyard building, and there is much in evidence of its rich history. It has a comfortable living room which will be cool in the hot summer and warm from the wood burner in the winter. The terrace is perfect for dining and relaxing at any time of day. The bedroom is a lovely space to watch the sunrise.

Location

The neighbourhood

The nearest place to stock up is Montpon - a 15-minute drive for a deli, pizza cabin, lots of food shops and a great mid-week market. St Foy has a market on Saturdays and Bergerac on Wednesdays (which also has an airport, 40 minutes). There's a night market in Villefranche on a Friday evening from 6.30. Périgueux is 45 minutes by car and has a Moorish cathedral and the Vesunna Roman villa. Bordeaux is an hour the other way.

Local points of interest from Justine & Michael Elliott

  • Just over a mile away, the ruined Chateau de Gurson overlooks the Lac de Gurson, a charming swimming lake with beach, playground, cafe, and kayaking and paddle boarding in the summer months.
  • Cycling and walking routes thread their way between villages and vineyards in the beautiful countryside around the chateau. Just next door, Vincent the vigneron makes the excellent Reve de Ternac wine, and always welcomes visitors to taste and buy.
  • You're 30 minutes from St Emilion, a remarkable medieval town at the centre of one of the world's premier wine regions. Stroll the cobbled streets, explore the life of the eponymous saint, buy fabulous wine and have lunch in one of the many great bistros.
  • The chic, cosmopolitan city of Bordeaux is just an hour away. From flea markets to designer boutiques to the foodie heaven of the Marché du Capucins, there's shopping for everyone. Bordeaux also boasts museums, theatres and a thriving culinary scene.
  • Dordogne markets are full of life, and a chance to find local specialties like heritage vegetables, foie gras, and Perigord truffles. The Saturday market in St Foy le Grande, just 15 minutes away, has been voted one of the best markets in France.
  • For trips further afield, the beaches and surfing of Arcachon and Cap Ferret are reachable for a day trip, as are the castles, caves and bastide towns of the upper Dordogne.

Introducing

Justine & Michael Elliott

Michael and Justine bought the château and gites as an escape from their busy London life (she's an anaesthetist, he's a technology manager) and want their two sons to have the opportunity to have a great outside adventure. Their neighbours, Jill and Bill, act as property managers and will do the meet and greet.
