The Experience
Unless you’re a total minimalist you’ll feel happy the minute you open the rose-framed front door: there are books and games, antiques, deep armchairs, lovely artworks and a cosy wood-burner for chilly evenings. A simple kitchen has all you need for holiday cooking (with a barbecue outside too) and a welcome pack of basics, plus a bottle of local wine awaits.
Your own gravelled courtyard is shaded by the Linden tree (Le Tilleul) but catches the morning sun – lovely to have a leisurely breakfast or a cup of tea here after a swim. The 10-metre pool is shared occasionally with the owners but still feels very private. You’re welcome to wander out of your French windows to the west-facing rear garden; a peaceful spot with only birdsong to disturb.
Walk along trails through magnificent woodland directly from the cottage, hire bikes, join the Vézelay to Compostela Pilgrims’ Way, sample truffles and foie gras from the local markets along with some glorious wines, feel very French.

Le Tilleul is a haven of tranquility in the Périgord Vert. A truly cosy, comfy cottage with warm, welcoming hosts in James and Sheena and a wonderful swimming pool to cool off in in the heat of summer. The surrounding area is utterly beautiful with dense forests and meandering rivers interspersed with sunflower fields and walnut groves. There are magnificent châteaux and charming towns to visit like Périgueux, Brantôme and Saint-Jean-de-Côle and after exploring the area it is heaven to come back to Le Tilleul and relax with a chilled glass of rosé! We couldn’t recommend it more highly!

We've just returned after 3 years. Nothing could stop us from coming back! James & Sheena's welcoming presence only adds to this charming cottage complete with your own well kept pool. Many trails to walk or sit under your Linden tree and listen to the buzzing bees while inhaling the scent of evening primrose. One of our top ten spots after travelling in France for 15 years.

We stayed at Le Tilleul in the first week of June and can wholly recommend it. The pretty gîte is exactly as it looks in the photographs as is the gorgeous pool, which is a superb place to swim, read and relax whilst listening to the birdsong. James and Sheena are excellent, friendly hosts with good recommendations for visiting Periguex (including the parking!), the markets at Thiviers and Sorges, and local walks. We ate superb food at L’escapade des sens and also recommend the innovative restaurant at St. Jean de Cole - Le temps des met. Thank you James and Sheena for your great hospitality.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're in a tiny hamlet, secluded but not utterly remote. Two small towns are just five minutes away by car, with a post office, pharmacy, good bakery and supermarket. Sorges (3.5 km) is home to Auberge de la Truffe, a fine dining restaurant known for local specialities. Thiviers (12km) has cafés and a super Saturday market. Brantôme, known as ‘The Venice of the Dordogne’, is 30 minutes by car.
Local points of interest from James & Sheena Willis
- 'Périgord Vert' is the lushest region of the Dordogne- and the least crowded! Visit the châteaux of Puyguilhem, Bourdeilles and Jumilhac-le-Grand, and the amazing, pre-historic wall paintings of the Grotte de Villars. Beautiful countryside, empty roads!
- A little further afield, visit the spiralling towns of Aubeterre and Uzerche, the châteaux of Hautefort and Coussac-Bonneval; the hill-top plateau of Mont Gargan, a lovely walk with stunning panoramic views, and the château and National Stud at Pompadour.
- Pretty St Jean de Côle, with fine Romanesque church and château, is nearby. Enchanting Brantôme (the ‘Venice of the Dordogne’, straddling the River Dronne), with its ancient abbey, range of restaurants, antique shops and galleries, is 30 minutes' drive.
- Sorges, our local town, is the truffle centre of the region. During the winter season there is a Sunday market dedicated solely to the noble tuber– bargain with the sellers! There is even a truffle museum. A local farm offers tours and tastings.
- Foie Gras is the other local speciality; again, the local farm offers visits, as well as sales. The geese range unfenced, kept honest by the owners' sheepdogs. Buy for immediate consumption, or 'sous vide' to take home. Add a glass or two of Montbazillac!
- We are lucky to have an excellent restaurant, 'Auberge de la Truffe, close by. Perigueux (25km) offers a wide range of eateries, as well as being a lovely town– winding mediaeval alleys, hidden squares, markets, museum. And great shopping!

Introducing
James & Sheena Willis
James (a photographer) and Sheena (a fashion designer) are separated from you by a barn. They are affable and fuss-free hosts, happy to deliver a continental breakfast, give you a lift to a walking route, share their garden and pool and generally be around if you need them. Otherwise they'll leave you to your own devices. You’ll see their friendly English setters loafing about.
We had a wonderful late summer 2 weeks at Le Tilleul. The gite exceeded our expectations, quiet & comfortable & just right for couples. James & Sheena were perfect hosts, discreet but on hand if we needed information regarding places to visit, places to eat, including a fabulous restaurant in nearby Thiviers (L'escapade des Sens, Michelin star quality food but not Michelin Star prices) A car is essential, but there are several nearby supermarkets in Thiviers & Sorges. We totally recommend Le Tilleul.
