The Experience

Not the most beautiful street in town for this laid-back summer beach pad, but don’t be put off – once you’re in it’s fine. It’s an unusual layout: the tiny house is one large room with a double bed, little kitchenette (microwave, small fridge, air fryer) table and chairs, a separate double bedroom and bathroom with bath and shower over.

Then it’s out onto the patio for a rainwater dip pool, barbecue and sink, steps up to a flat roof for sunbathing and the annexe. Here you’ll find the sitting room with comfy seating, pretty fabrics and another double with bathroom (again a bath with shower over). Art is original, furniture is fine.

Prepare simple lunches in the kitchenette or sizzle something on the barbecue – at night fairly lights will glitter. Spend long sandy days on the delightful beaches, cycle along quiet paths through pine forest, visit the food shops and market of bustling Montalivet and bring your spoils home.

Reviews

What fun it would be to enjoy the famous beaches of the Medoc peninsula eight minutes' drive away by staying here. It's so inspiring, designed by a veritable whizz of an interior design, using reclaimed everything to create a space which feels very laid-back and summery. Bohemian and artistic, the absolute opposite of a chain hotel! I particularly love the private patio garden and its rainwater dip pool.

Location

The neighbourhood

Jane runs her antique shop four days a week with coffee and cake – everything will be for sale including all in the Tiny House. Vendays is a lively village with a daily market, restaurants, three bakeries and an excellent wine cave. You can cycle to the beach through forest and marshes or drive ten minutes for surfing – lessons can be booked for teens. Taste wines, visit little oyster ports.

Local points of interest from Jane Butler

  • Plenty of opportunity for everyone to do their own thing. with flexible accommodation.. France's largest lakes a short drive south for safe bathing, fishing and water sports. 300 amous Medoc chateaux a short drive to the west, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild
  • For those who like antiques and authentic old houses part of house is an antique shop and most furniture in rooms are priced discreetly and for sale. Bordeaux is easily accessible from Vendays with a bus to Lesparre and regular trains and buses to centre.
  • Montalivet has a famous everyday market selling everything from delicious food and wine to hippy beads. clothes and bangles. ...Load up with delicacies from every part of the world in the morning and return to eat in the patio with your purchases.
  • Famous Medoc chateaux set up their stands in Montalivet for you to taste their wines, give you advice and invite you to visit. Oysters and chilled white wine in Montalivet market are known throughout Bordeaux and many Bordelais visit at the weekend.
  • If 12 Kms of sandy beaches at Montalivet are not to your liking there are plenty of others up the coast to Le Verdon like Soulac with its turn of the century vibe and several others with little swimming lagoons built during the war and nudie stretches.
  • Lively nightlife and concerts all summer in Montalivet...take the bikes to cycle there and back or catch the bus 2 minutes away. The three little restaurants and delicatessen in Vendays village are very reasonable and friendly ...... a 5 minute stroll.
