The Experience

This is one of three houses on a private coastal estate once home to the French author, whose novels were partly set here and whose pines still shade the grounds. Salt air had taken its toll on the original woodwork, so the owners completely gutted and rebuilt the interiors, saving what could be salvaged and furnishing the rest with 20th-century antiques, giving the house a look that is unpretentious and full of character.

Two pretty bedrooms each come with a private en suite shower room, one with a queen bed and the other with twin singles, with a cot available in either for younger guests. The kitchen is generously equipped for keen cooks, there’s room for three to cook alongside each other.

When you arrive, a thoughtful welcome pack of cider, butter, crepes, bread, cheese and pate, all sourced locally, awaits. And a team are there to welcome you and answer any questions. Beyond the house, a valley of tall pines runs down to a dune and a sweeping bay, with the sea a minute’s walk away.

Reviews

I was lucky enough to stay in this idyllic and beautifully renovated place. We feasted on freshly caught lobster as the sun set over the glistening sea beyond the dune, at the bottom of the garden of tall pines planted by Colette, the famous writer who once owned the property. My perfect stay ended with an early-morning swim, admiring the property from the warm and clean and gorgeous water. It was heavenly!
