The Experience
Inside feels cosy and spacious at once, with stone walls in the kitchen and sitting room, terracotta tiled floors, gorgeous antiques and art, luscious fabrics and warm colours. A large, bright sitting room has comfortable sofas, a screen for watching films and views over the lake and grounds beyond.
Three bedrooms, one in a separate building (perfect for escapees), have softly coloured plaster walls, good antique English furniture and very comfortable beds. They share a gorgeous bathroom with a large bath. The kitchen has everything a cook could need and there are two large tables for sociable meals, one in the kitchen and one in the sitting room. You’ll probably find a couple of bottles of wine and some honey too.
In the courtyard garden you’ll find a barbecue and elegant furniture, but you’re welcome to wander the big garden too and use the pool. The cottage can be taken together with the main house in summer or on its own out of season.

- Borrowing bikes and heading off to explore some wonderful countryside and little towns
- Walking straight from the door, perhaps with a picnic, returning for a refreshing dip in the pool

Location
The neighbourhood
Borrow bikes for exploring further afield. The whole area is a sanctuary for wildlife, so you'll spot plenty of birds and maybe some rare orchids. Walks and picnics will be sublime, through garrigue and coniferous pine forests. Palaja is 7km for local shops, post office etc. and has a good Argentinian restaurant, La Pampa. Carcassonne is a 20-minute drive, Mediterranean beaches an hour.
Local points of interest from Viola & James
- During the summer months, the region becomes alive with cultural events, from local village festivals and fairs to music concerts. The Festival de Carcassonne, which takes place in July is one of the ten biggest festivals in France.
- Nestled in the heart of the Corbières, Domaine is renowned for its spectacular unspoilt landscape and natural beauty, and there are no shortages of walks across its 630 acres of hills and forest. We highly recommend taking a walk up the Montahut Est hill.
- Tucked away between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, the Aude is a dream location for cyclists, providing a wonderful mix of hilly inland rides and more gentle paths alongside its rivers and wine routes.
- The history of the Domaine de la Vène is closely tied to its horses, and several of the surrounding meadows have been converted into pasture. The stables are still today home to two retired horses.
- The Pyrenees offer some fantastic skiing, which you’ll find is totally unspoilt, more intimate, family-friendly, and affordable than the Alps. The ski resort at the Mont d’Olmes is within 1h40 drive from the house.
- Located only 15 minutes from the house on ancient vineyards, the Domaine d’Auriac has an 18-hole golf course that is open all year round. The course’s perfectly manicured lawns and exceptional panorama on the local landscape.

Introducing
Viola & James
James bought this rambling old winery many years ago and has been restoring it with much energy, taste and flair since. He was previously an art dealer, hence the many fine paintings, ceramics, furniture and textiles. He loves to engage with visitors and is an enthusiastic storyteller. Viola, who helps run the place and cooks for you, creates fine hand-embroidered botanical textiles.
