The Experience

Monique and Paul-André bought this old wine-grower’s estate on the edge of town and carefully restored it inside and out. They look after you beautifully – she has endless energy and adores people, he is quiet and charming. Find an airy guest sitting room, gardens with views to the Pyrenees and luxurious bedrooms.

Breakfast in the orangery, or under the pomegranate trees in summer: pastries, bread, fruit, cheese, homemade cake, jam made by a neighbour. It’s a few minutes’ walk to Moussoulens village for places to eat – there’s a bakery and store too.

Discover hilltop bastides and castles of the Cathars. Carcassonne, nearby, has lively Thursday and Sunday markets. Montolieu, a five-minute drive, has tons of bookshops to browse – the French version of Hay. Cyclists love the Canal du Midi routes.

La Rougeanne is a total delight. We stayed 3 nights in the Acanthe room, which like the others is furnished extremely tastefully with antique furniture, and has its own private small garden that is beautifully maintained as is the wider (shared) garden. The setting is extremely peaceful - the only noise being the bird song (whch included a nightingale singing at the bottom of the garden!). Monique could not have been more helpful, suggesting (excellent) local restaurants for an evening meal and places to visit. Fantastic pool and breakfasts!

Patricia, Hawarden, Flintshire

What a gem of a place. Monique is the perfect host - nothing is too much trouble for her. She goes out of her way to ensure you have everything you need to make the most of your stay in this beautiful region. We enjoyed superb breakfasts under the shade of the pomegranate trees by the infinity pool every morning. Monique offers delicious homemade meals with wine etc. if you wish to stay around - or will make a reservation at a local restaurant for you. Our room was just lovely - cleaned and bed made every day - clean towels every other day. We loved it and will most certainly be back.

Katharine, Picton Ontario

We stayed at Monique’s for 2 nights and had a wonderful time. We enjoyed one of Monique’s light suppers which was superb and very reasonably priced. Breakfast in the orangery idyllic. Go earlier in the season and use the beautiful pool! Perfect place. Merci Monique

My wife and I stayed booked in last minute for three nights with our two and a half year old this summer and had a fantastic stay. We were blown away by the hospitality that Monique showed us. We had some troubles with our vehicle which we had to resolve during our stay and she did her very best to help us in every way possible (ferrying us to the local town for dinner, arranging transport to Carcassone etc). The property itself is beautiful as is the area - a proper southern French experience but without the volume of tourists in Provence. We will return - thanks for everything Monique!

The neighbourhood

There’s much to do here: the book village Montolieu holds a monthly Sunday market; there are Cathars castles and Benedictine abbeys within easy reach; UNESCO heritage sites Carcassonne (14km) with its covered food market - Les Halles - and walking, cycling and boat trips on the Canal du Midi. The Mediterranean coast is a 45-minute drive and 1.5 hours will get you to the Pyrenees.

Local points of interest from Monique & Paul-André Glorieux

  • Canal du Midi.
  • The medieval city of Carcassonne (10km).
  • Montolieu - the 'village of books'. There is a book market every third Sunday of the month.
  • Cathar town of Minerve.
  • The abbey of Fontfroide - a former Cistercian monastery.
  • Cathar castles: Lastours, Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, Montségur, Puylaurens, Saissac

Introducing

Monique & Paul-André Glorieux

Monique and Paul-André, originally from Paris, bought the property as a wreck many years ago and embarked on a huge restoration project. They have been welcoming guests for almost 15 years. Monique has a way with interiors and is also a musician – there is a lovely grand piano in one of the sitting rooms.
