The Experience

Your three-storey cottage has views of the lagoon from every window, and a narrow pedestrian street runs down beside the house into the town centre. In front there’s a terrace with spectacular views over the water to the Mont St Clair and Sête.

Rob lives nearby and you’ll receive a warm welcome, along with some wine, wood for the fire and kitchen basics, but otherwise you look after yourself. Pop out to buy fresh bread and croissants for breakfast and eat around a wooden table or out on the terrace; there are plenty of restaurants within five minutes’ walk – Meze is famous for its shellfish so you’ll always find mussels and oysters on the menu.

You can cycle or hike around the lagoon or go bird watching, sailing or swimming; there are spas in nearby Balaruc-les-Bains. Visit Montpellier or Béziers, both less than an hour away, for museums, art galleries and shops.

Reviews

I would love to come back here, stay for a while & get to know the changes of light over the water. The house, welcoming & well loved, is in such a good place. It feels restful here & yet walk out for the buzz of restaurants, good fresh food & wine. This is an all season place, with much to explore & discover locally.

Location

The neighbourhood

Mèze is popular year-round, mostly for its wonderful fish restaurants and the surrounding scenery. The heart of the old town is nearly all pedestrians only so no cars to dodge. As it’s a market town you’ll be able to get fresh fruit and vegetables and several boulangeries and épiceries can be reached in a few minutes on foot.

Local points of interest from Rob Budden & Jason Clifford

  • La Maison des Oliviers overlooks the étang de Thau lagoon, renowned throughout France for its Bouzigues oysters
  • The house is a short stroll from family friendly beaches, portside restaurants and a twice weekly outdoor market (Thursdays and Sundays)
  • Mèze is in the heart of Languedoc wine country with dozens of lovely vineyards within a short drive. Picpoul de Pinet is made just 4km away and is best drunk with seafood or oysters
  • There are good bus links to local places of interest including the lively Mediteranean port of Sète, medieval Pézènas and the bustling city of Montpellier
  • Méze is a great base for exploring other parts of southern France including Carcassonne, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille or Nîmes
  • Mèze is easily accessible from Béziers airport (35 mins), Montpellier airport (25 mins), Nîmes airport (45 mins) and Carcassonne airport (just over an hour). Paris is just over 3 hours away on the TGV high speed train.

Introducing

Rob Budden & Jason Clifford

Rob and Jason, who met at university, are chatty and welcoming - they clearly love having guests. They moved here permanently in 2013 and have never regretted it. They both speak French and have thoroughly immersed themselves in the Languedoc, so do ask them about the best places to eat and things to do.
