The Experience
Barbara generously leaves you a picnic supper for the day of your arrival – cold meats, cheese, fresh bread, fruit and wine – all local and regional. The spacious sitting room with its high, beamed ceiling and travertine floor is a happy spot for a quiet read, a dabble with a board game or a convivial chat, and the sofas are very comfortable.
There are two bedrooms (both can be doubles or twins) but Barbara only lets to couples. They have their own shower rooms with plenty of space to put your pots and potions, hang your towel and enjoy the big showers. One side of the wing looks over the rill in the garden, the other over the quirky henhouse and big skies. There are two balconies with tables and chairs for gazing, or you can sit by the pool, hidden by trees and shrubs.
The open-plan kitchen has all you need to rustle up holiday meals and you can eat outdoors if you prefer. It’s romantic here.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're ensconced in a bucolic background of vineyards, small hills and country lanes for walks (discover ancient Villenevette) and cycles. Clermont l'Hérault is a five-minute drive for shops, restaurants and a cinema. Pézenas is 20km, a lovely little town for shopping and people-watching. Béziers (40km) is a regional hub with a Gothic cathedral and a fine esplanade for a shady stroll. Roman sites are one hour.
Local points of interest from Barbara Simpson-Birks
- Lac Salagou is a beautiful lake 10 mins from the house for boating, sailing or swimming, there are no noisy motorboats. Laze by the water with a picnic.
- Villeneuvette is a beautiful old village and was a manufacturer to the royal family before the Republic. Walk through the woods in 20 mins, have lunch or sit at the bar and drink up the history.
- Clermont-l'Hérault is a lively and non-touristy town, 5 mins by car, with a wonderful market on Wednesdays – you can buy oysters, cheeses, olives, bread, handmade soaps. There are restaurants, bars, a cinema and a theatre.
- Drive to Marseillan for the port and oysters. It's a small, picturesque town with great restaurants and a beach. It's also the home of Noilly Pratt.
- Drive to Mèze and take the boat to Sète, it's a lovely way to get there. Eat the freshest fish down at the docks, admire the beautiful buildings and visit art galleries.
- Visit Béziers, Montpellier or Carcasonne all within an hour's drive.

Introducing
Barbara Simpson-Birks
Barbara ran successful businesses back in the UK before moving here for the climate. She built the two barns and main house and she loves sharing her special places with guests. You won't find her children or grandchildren roaming here but you may meet the chickens.
