The Experience

On a quiet one-way street in a sleepy part of town, this elegant winegrower’s house is stately and smart, with a fine ornamental garden.

Flagstone floors in the hallway (deliciously heated) lead to a sweeping staircase and a light-filled landing. There are five bedrooms – three doubles on the first floor, each with private en suite shower room, and a family suite on the top floor with two doubles, a private sitting room and shared shower room. There’s also a two-bedroom annexe next door, so it’s a great place to come if you’re a group.

A shared sitting room with squashy sofas and a baby grand piano opens onto a terrace overlooking the courtyard and garden. To the side of the house, a saltwater pool and an outdoor kitchen. Owner James is a fantastic cook and happy to prepare picnic baskets, lunches or delicious dinners served with local wines.

Reviews

This elegant manoir has been impeccably renovated for optimum comfort, and is an ideal spot for family celebrations and group retreats. Experience southern France with a British twist and let chef James prepare sumptuous celebratory meals while you explore historic villages, unwind under the olive tree or take a dip in the pool. The Med is 30 minutes away but you might be too relaxed to get there!

Location

The neighbourhood

Ditch the car – it’s a two-minute stroll to the bakery, grocery, cafés and restaurants (recommended are Le Brasero and La Corneille Gourmande). Explore local markets, brocantes and vineyards, or head to the river Orb for swimming and canoeing (15-min drive). Explore Béziers and the Canal du Midi (20 mins) or hit the beach at Valras-Plage (30 mins).

Local points of interest from James Judd

  • Béziers is one of France's oldest cities, set in the Occitanie region near the Mediterranean coast. Founded over 2700 years ago, it sits on a hill overlooking the Orb river, with sweeping views of vineyards and plains. The city is best known for its canal.
  • Pézenas (35-min drive) is a beautifully preserved market town, famous for its historic streets, artistic spirit, and rich antique scene. Once home to playwright Molière, the town has long attracted creatives, collectors, and craftspeople.
  • There are so many fabulous villages to be seen from a beautiful walk in the area.
  • Beaches near Béziers are along the Mediterranean coast of Languedoc, about 20-30 mins by car, offering wide sandy shores, warm water, and options from lively to natural. Valras-Plage is a classic seaside resort with a 1.5km golden beach.
  • Food and wine are passions of mine as a chef and winemaker so a must if you too enjoy. Come and experience the vendage, and sample last year's wine.
