The Experience

The château has a turbulent past which you can delve into if you wish, but it looks as though nothing has disturbed its genteel peace for aeons. Established trees envelop you, the rose garden has no less than 3,000 varieties, the orchard produces fruit for jams at breakfast and the beautiful orangery sits calmly by the pool. Wander at will to find many terraces and quiet places to sit and listen to birdsong – perhaps with a glass of wine from the owners’ excellent cellar.

Bedrooms are all upstairs and you’ll enjoy American style comfort with thick wall-to-wall carpets, grand views and enormous beds; bathrooms have a bit of glitz, some with baths in the middle of the room. Wake to breakfast on the terrace: locally-sourced and organic bread and pastries, fresh fruit, hams, cheeses, eggs and cereals.

Set off on walks along the river Vienne, perhaps to Candes-St-Martin for lunch. Hire bikes: the Loire à Vélo cycle route passes close by.

Reviews

The château is an elegant old-school B&B that remains gloriously frozen in time in terms of its elegance. It would be wonderful to stay here, enjoying the park and luxury of the grand bedrooms, discuss wine with the charming owners and explore the best of the Loire on your doorstep!

Location

The neighbourhood

This is a mythical area. An extremely fertile spit of land known as 'Le Véron' which links the river Vienne finally with the mighty Loire. Both rivers are bordered by trees and rich with wildlife. Chinon is just ten minutes away and has plenty of fine restaurants for all budgets. You've several AOCs to choose from: Chinon, Bourgueil or Saumur and the owners can help you organise a tasting tour.

Local points of interest from Pierre Fontaney & Grahame Elliott

  • Château de Détilly is in the heart of the beautiful and historic Loire Valley: mediaeval Chinon and its fortress, the châteaux of Azay-le-Rideau, Villandry, Ussé ("Sleeping Beauty's Castle"), Langeais and Saumur are all between 10 and 30 minutes away.
  • There are many dining options, from simpler to more gastronomic, particularly in the old town of Chinon - where Joan of Arc first recognized the King of France - or along the stunning Loire River in Candes Saint-Martin or Montsoreau.
  • Wine-lovers will also be content: situated in the Chinon appellation, Détilly is also only a few minutes away from Bourgueil, both known since ancient times for their quality wines, particularly red. And only one mile away is the local "Maison du vin".

Introducing

Pierre Fontaney & Grahame Elliott

Pierre is French and met Grahame (a concert pianist, writer and teacher) while he was in Australia. Pierre has had a career in business but always had a great longing to own a château, so when they came across Détilly they snapped it up. They are keen wine amateurs and plan to organise wine tastings for their guests. They are passionate about the history of the place and can enlighten you too.
