The Experience

History runs deep here: the Manoir dates from the 14th century, an 11th-century monastery once existed on the same site and the Romans built a temple here too. The owner lets out just one pretty suite (sleeps up to five) with a balcony so you’ll have the place and grounds almost to yourself. You feast on delicious breakfasts – Nathalie is a skilled pastry chef – either in the magnificent guard hall in front of a roaring fire burning in the medieval hearth or the garden on fine days.

The location is spectacular, at the point where the Loire and Cher rivers say hello on the opposite side to the Château de Villandry – a gentle hour’s stroll away and a must-visit for the spectacular interiors and world-famous gardens. The entire treasure trove of Loire châteaux are close by, interesting towns with lively brocante markets too. Hire bikes and kayaks in Savonnières for tours beside or on the water.

Return to sleep deeply in your romantic bedroom.

Reviews

This is a very charming and authentic B&B, a family-owned medieval Manoir in the very heart of the Loire valley. The surrounding countryside is green and lush, the rivers flow nearby. Nathalie the owner is a brilliant pastry chef and serves up fresh pastries at breakfast and is glad to tell the story of how her parents rescued the house from ruin when she was a girl.

Location

The neighbourhood

The countryside is full of meadows and wildlife but the vibrant city of Tours is just 20 mins for a weekly flea and flower market, monthly antique market and Musée des Beaux-Arts. Chenonceau and Amboise (both 20 mins), d'Ussé (30 mins) and Blois (40 mins) offer the full châteaux tour. Eat out at L'Étape Gourmande in Villandry (10-min drive) for traditional cuisine and homemade cheese made with milk from the resident nanny goats.

Local points of interest from Nathalie Salles

  • Foncher has a long history, dating back to the early 10th century. As a fief belonging to the Château of Tours, it was notably a priory, property of the Abbey of Marmoutier and under the authority of Henry II, King of England.
  • Restored in 1963, the Manoir de Foncher, ‘stamped’ by the Plantagenets, is now listed in the Directory of Historic Monuments. Our manor and its medieval setting will provide you with a unique and timeless experience.
  • Ideally located, the Manoir de Foncher offers a privileged spot from which to discover the Loire Valley’s rich history and its many châteaux, notably Villandry and its famous gardens only 5km away.
  • Food and wine lovers can enjoy the vineyards of Chinon and discover the delights of Touraine gastronomy.
  • Discover exceptional landscapes and UNESCO world heritage sites through local hiking routes or via the Loire à Vélo (the Loire by bike) trail across the Loire Anjou Touraine Regional Natural Park.
  • You will enjoy our cultural heritage and the richness of local life through the wide choice of activities that await you.

Introducing

Nathalie Salles

Nathalie's parents rescued the Manoir from a ruin when she was a girl and she enjoyed the freedom of growing up here. She moved to England as a young woman where she became a designer until she trained as a pastry chef and opened her own French pastry business. After returning to the Manoir to care for her mother in 2022 she decided to remain and look after the property that was her parents' labour of love.
