The Experience

The prosperous looking manor by the church (once a modest farmhouse) has become a splendid B&B. Tea in the salon with Frederick – Anglophile restorer with a great sense of humour – is civilised and fun, while dinner at the big table (homemade orange wine, local organic produce) with both hosts, and perhaps other guests, is a gorgeous feast. As for the suites, they have been designed in the spirit of the house, one à la Napoleon III, the other Louis Philippe. Towels are snowy, bed linen crisp and all is generous and bright. Wake to fruit compotes served on antique china, come home to a beautiful box-hedged garden.

Reviews

Richard, London

Mr Frederick Metz is an artistic and delightful gentleman conserving this wonderful manor house, ancient barn/etc. Our large totally square bedroom was a superb as is the whole house, outbuildings and garden. Its simply a privilage to stay with Mr M, every detail is attended to by Mr. M and breakfast is a tasty wonder. We were only sorry NOT be be able to enjoy dinner during out two night stay. We hope to return one day soon, Mr. M says the house might well operate for another 10 years as it is today. As Sawday says a 'splendid B&B' but also so unusual with Mr. Metz attending to everything.

Nick, Essex

Les Officiers is one of the most delightful dinner, b & bs that we have stayed in. The house itself is fascinating and there was a warm welcome from Frederick. We had a large and very tastefully furnished double room with a comfortable double bed, a sitting area and well appointed bathroom. We had an aperitif of white wine and nibbles in the library followed by a superb four course dinner with wine in front of a fire in the salon. Breakfast was in front of another fire in the kitchen with home made yoghurt and jams, croissants and pain perdu. Overall delightful and comfortable.

Merryl, Milton Keynes

This is undoubtedly the best B&B we have ever stayed in. The house has been painstakingly and beautifully restored in keeping with the age of the house with many family heirlooms and antiques. Frederick is absolutely delightful, knowledgeable and friendly – and an excellent cook. Both the dinner and breakfast we enjoyed were fantastic and everything was organic and homemade. The accommodation is at the back of the house – well away from the road, and is luxurious, quirky and comfortable. The bed and bathroom are excellent.

Corina, Zürich, Switzerland

What a gem! We stopped here on our way to England. It feels just as if you entered a home in the 19 th century but with all of todays' comfort. Beautifully restored, wonderful home cooked meals, peaceful garden and enhanced by a very welcoming host.

Heather, Ross-on-Wye

A beautiful old house sympathetically restored with fantastic family heirlooms and full of history. Welcoming host and offered tea, wine etc. Accommodation was wonderful, with large rooms, attractive gardens and surroundings. The home-produced aperitifs were greatly appreciated and was accompanied by great conversation with Frederick and Nicholas about our shared interests in history and cookery. The evening meal was superb and the wine, delicious. Breakfast was a feast and each day we were offered a different speciality. Could not be faulted, best ever
