The Experience
Find ancient stone floors, creaking floorboards, hidden alcoves and a beam to duck; three eating places inside, four terraces and, cut into the steep cliffside, an infinity pool, underwater-lit at night. There’s even an old bell to summon people to lunch from pool frolics or barn table tennis. Bedrooms range from the tiny single in the pigeonnier to the large Romeo and Juliet room with balcony, of course.
The Tower has a twin room and a sofabed in its top-floor sitting room. Furniture is a mix of French antique and modern, the L-shaped sitting room is big enough to waltz in, the antique-dealing owners have an eye for the odd quirk (the semolina cave painting in the loo is by a member of the RA…).
You are five minutes from Luzech’s shops and market (25 on foot down the valley path) and spoilt for wine-tastings and gastronomic choice. The views sweep and soar and the walking is stunning in this wooded valley above the river Lot.

As a group of friends, we enjoyed a week in this beautiful and spacious property. Located on a remote hillside, the surroundings are fabulous, with views across a valley, where we spotted deer, kites and all manner of butterflies and insects. The house is extremely comfortable with everything you need for a relaxing break. Think faded grandeur and idiosyncrasy rather than five-star sterility. We enjoyed barbecuing in the evening and watching the stars over a glass or two of the local wine. The walk to Luzech was a little further than expected, but we managed it twice. A very memorable stay.

We spent a week here as a group of nine. We have had a great time here. A beautiful house in a great area that is unspoilt and full of so many things to do. The house is perfectly set up - kitchen is full of all the things you need, excellent indoor and outdoor spaces, fantastic pool. Jill was brilliant to deal with and has loads of practical and useful advice. The walk down to Luzech is beautiful - we did it three times visiting restaurants, vineyards and other sites. This is an ideal house for a large group - plenty of rooms to spread out. Thanks and we hope to come again. Ed and family

We loved the house inside and out and the wooded valley was just beautiful and so peaceful. The pool is situated in such a lovely spot, with views of the valley and many options for natural shade during the day. It’s been a while since I have seen so many butterflies, and we identified redstarts nesting in the roof. I really enjoyed spending time in each of the living areas of the house - the light and airy salon on the upper floor, the darker, cooler lower floor, perfect for lunches on hot days, and the two terraces with their different aspects. A truly special place to stay.

Location
The neighbourhood
This is an unspoilt corner of France - the land of Bordeaux and Cahors wine, fields of sunflowers and maize, truffles, castles, fortified bastides and hidden cave systems. The Lot forms part of Perigord, one of the famous gastronomic regions of France. Cahors is a fair-sized town some 20km upriver from Luzech and has Roman origins along with a dramatic medieval bridge, the Pont Valentre.
Local points of interest from Jill & Nick Bichard
- There is marvellous walking and cycling from the house. The Balcon de Luzech is a cliff path with a great view of the vineyards that leads down to the small town of Luzech where you can buy your croissants then walk back along the green track up the valley
- Roubignol is in the middle of the Cahors appellation controlee wine region. Most of the chateaux in the area do wine tastings and some of them have concerts during the summer
- Castles, caves and churches: the medieval castle of Bonaguil is very impressive and up river are the pretty village of St Cirq la Popie, the Chateau de Cenevieres with its alchemist's chamber and the stunning cave paintings of the Grotte de Pech Merle.
- Markets locally on most days: Luzech has one on Wednesdays, Prayssac has one on the concentric roads around the church on Fridays and Montcuq has a general one every Sunday. There are local small supermarkets and larger ones in Prayssac and Cahors
- Canoeing on the Dordogne is a one hour's drive away but worth it. You take a picnic and spend most of the day on the river with small castles above dramatic cliffs, have a swim in the clear water and are picked up and returned to your car in the evening.
- The Perigord is one of the gastronomic regions of France and although the Michelin starred Le Gindreau is amazing there are many good smaller restaurants and cafes in the area. Foie gras, truffles and confit de canard are specialities.

We'll have to send the form - nothing from inspector - nor any neighbourhood section, had to lift that from their website
We had a wonderful stay at Roubignol, enjoying the beautiful old house in its peaceful, rural grounds. To stay in a real family home, with antique furniture, masses of books etc, is always a great privilege. Our fortnight rotated through 100° heat, thunder storms, rain, sun, cool mists - and the thick-walled old house coped with it all. Lovely pool, too.
