The Experience

Orchards, meadows and woodland on your doorstep, birdsong in the air (there’s a resident nightingale) and two friendly dogs padding about. Dip in the pool, play pétanque in the shade, pick fruit from the trees or collect eggs straight from the source. Quiet, rural and full of charm, the property has plenty of peaceful corners to pause with a book or glass of wine.

The two gîtes are compact yet comfortable, each with a king-size bed, generous shower and private outside space. Interiors are simple and open plan, with a well-equipped kitchen for home cooking. There’s no TV but a good selection of books, games and walking guides. If you need it, speedy broadband keeps you connected – on rainy days you’ll feel snug rather than stuck.

Your hosts Heather and Sam – a chef and a sommelier – are a real joy and give you table d’hôte in the shared dining area or in your gîte. There are regular feast nights too. Menus are local and seasonal, inspired by the orchard and garden.

Reviews

Were it not for the fact that I live locally, I would be delighted to book a stay with Heather and Sam, just to bask in the glow of their warm hospitality. Part of the charm would be the joy of enjoying some of Heather's fabulous, seasonal cooking, whilst being transcended by Sam's accompanying wine selection. Such a pretty spot, with a wealth of gorgeous villages to visit and markets to raid.

Jennifer, An hour north of Toulouse

Delightful! A long-time Sawdays devotee, I (+ dog) have enjoyed good stays at small Sawdays rural retreats. This one was the most enjoyable. Big old stone buildings, bucolic pastoral landscape, late flowering roses in the courtyard. It,s quiet. A place for everything. Spotless but also very dog friendly (helped by Olive (who should have her own whippet-blog) and Elwood-the-cool). Heather and Sam, at very short notice, also conjured up a lovely lunch for friends who happened by. They are living the dream and are very happy to share it with you.

Location

The neighbourhood

Shops and cafés are a short drive: Caylus (9km) for boulangeries, Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val (9km) for markets, bars and restaurants. Swim in the Aveyron or Viaur river, lunch at a ‘guinguette’, or book L'Angle in Laguépie. Summer brings buzzing night markets, while nearby villages like Cordes-sur-Ciel, Penne and Bruniquel are perfect for day trips.

Local points of interest from Heather & Sam Lusardi

  • Food Markets: There are wonderful markets on every day of the week, but Saint Antonin Noble Val has one of the best in the region. Taking place every Sunday morning, this is an event not to be missed!
  • The region is dotted with beautiful medieval villages including Cordes-sur-ciel, Penne, Najac and Bruniquel. Castles and chateaux abound, and there is even a stunning modern art gallery with rose garden in a renovated abbey within 5 minutes of here.
  • Occitanie really knows how to celebrate its local traditions and produce and throughout the year there are wonderful festivals and events, including the chestnut festival in Laguépie in October, and the truffle and saffron markets between Dec-Feb.
  • The Aveyron gorges are a haven for wildlife, and for those who like to live on the wilder side! From wild swimming to paddle boarding, kayaking to climbing, you'll find it all here!
  • Autumn and spring are the perfect times for a walking holiday. The scenery in the Causses et Gorges de l'Aveyron is breathtaking, and there are a huge range of walks of different lengths and difficulties to keep the most avid rambler happy all year round.
  • For the gastronomes among you there is an excellent food and wine scene. The vineyards of Gaillac produce some of the most innovative and diverse wines in France. Excellent restaurants include Le Houx est Où, L'Angle, Le Moulin de Varen and Chez Jano.

Introducing

Heather & Sam Lusardi

Heather and Sam left high-pressure careers in the UK for a slower, more rooted life in France. Heather trained at Leiths and clearly loves creating memorable meals, while Sam, a certified sommelier, curates the wines. Their warmth and enthusiasm is infectious – you’ll very much feel a welcome part of the community.
