The Experience

Soak up the Charente’s deep blue skies and clean air from these well-designed cottages set in rolling vineyards: this is the land of Grande Champagne de Cognac. The 18th-century farm buildings hug a spacious courtyard where friendly owner Marie-Laure also runs a successful B&B.  Interiors are comfortable, with open fires for chilly nights and private outdoor spaces for long lazy lunches and dinners. Pamper yourselves in gorgeous bathrooms, sleep like logs in bedrooms with snowy linen and white painted furniture or good antiques, hunker down with a book in light, bright living rooms, whip up a storm in well-equipped modern kitchens. Children will be happy with playrooms and toys and games. Wander at will through the beautiful park with a river beyond, take a stroll in the shared walled garden, cool off in the gated saltwater pool – why not take all cottages and bring the whole family or a party of friends? Nip down to the coast or Angouleme for the TGV to Paris.

Reviews

We stayed at Le Logis du Paradis for 9 nights in August. Beautiful, luxury accommodation with fantastic hosts. We stayed in the main house on a b&b basis but there are also 2 gites which are both of a very high standard. Peaceful, relaxing, lovely pool and gardens and great restaurants nearby. You do need a car although Nick & Sally do lovely evening meals 3 times a week as an option too. Highly recommended!

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Marie-Laure Fornas

  • This early 18th Century Logis, on the edge of a small hamlet surrounded by vine-covered hills, was used originally to house 500 horses of Louis X1V's army, garrisoned there to fight the English.
  • In the 19th Century it became a Cognac distillery, which ceased to run in the 1960's, and was then largely abandoned. Now there is a piano bar with the old copper stills, opening onto the pool garden and the park.
  • The huge barn is a party room with ping pong, there is a croquet lawn, tree house and swings. Secure within the walls, children can run free in the large garden.
  • Cognac, Angouleme, Chateauneuf and Jarnac, all nearby, are pretty towns on the beautiful river Charente - you can swim, canoe, take boat trips and picnic along its banks, taste the local Pineau and Cognac, and try the many shops and restaurants.
  • The lovely, unspoilt western coastline is an hour's drive from the Logis Du Paradis, visit the wild beaches of Royan, the port of La Rochelle, taste oysters at Marennes, wander through the cobbled streets and arty shops of Talmont.
  • The zoo at Royan is a day's outing, St Palais sur Mer idyllic for parents and children alike. Eat fresh fish at Bob's, build sand castles and swim in gently lapping waves or take a stroll along the headland and coastal paths.
