The Experience

There’s room for everybody to sit and eat together inside the big house, the terrace has a table that seats 12 or you can set up a trestle in the open-sided barn and yoga studio for long, candlelit suppers. You’ll find a barbecue and welcoming bottles of champagne and local pineau – a place for very civilised holidays.

Interiors are sumptuous with upcycled antiques and mid-century finds, ornate mirrors and good art – some of which you can buy if you fall in love with it. For chilly days you’ll find wood-burners, books, games and TVs, but mostly you’ll be outside, sunbathing on loungers, slipping into the pool, being idle. There are a couple of bikes to borrow for a short hop to the bakery, or long trips out into the Charente countryside.

Bedrooms have antique beds with new mattresses, colours are tranquil, and there are plenty of pillows and cushions for committed readers; bathrooms are scented with delicious soaps and lotions from the Cotswolds.

Reviews

A very French house and cottage not to be missed. If you love old buildings, typical French interiors, casual dining in a delightful courtyard, relaxing yoga in an old stone barn or heading a few minutes down the road for gourmet dining experience in an historic village setting, then the Maison des Ifs is the place for you.

Spending time in Mason Des Ifs for ten days with wonderful hosts Jason and Tim was a classic holiday in our minds. There were nine of us - two families in all - and we comfortably spread ourselves across the stylish main house and the beautifully restored cottage, which included pool, yoga studio, zen garden, multiple seating areas and incredible cooking facilities (the huge barbecue in particular)! Jason and Tim’s excellent local knowledge of the area made our stay even more enjoyable with recommendations for trips to other neighbouring towns.

Nicola ,Rob Shimwell & Family, UK

We have just had an amazing family and friends holiday in this wonderfully restored house. Jason and Tim’s eye for detail is very exacting and it feels like you are entering a warm and inviting home. They were so responsive to our needs and made the stay so easy. They organised yoga and massages within their newly restored serenity space. It definitely restored us! They organised tennis and restaurants and advised us of places to see. Thank you Jason and Tim. I would highly recommend your brand of holiday to anyone.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's a quiet little village but you're only 3km from a good bakery and a supermarket for stocking up, and Montignac (3km) has a daily market. There are several good restaurants recommended by the owners including a an auberge which serves fine food beside a Romanesque abbey, and a café/bar. Culture vultures will head to pretty Angoulême, Cognac is 45 minutes for distillery tours and tastings.

Local points of interest from Jason

  • Angouleme is a lively cultural city 25km away with several festivals - the International Comics Festival, Film, Music and Circuit des Remparts. Great restaurants including La Cour and Le Lion Rouge. Vibrant covered market Les Halles has much local produce.
  • The Charente river provides our dept name. 15 mins away, one of the many local walks follows part of its course. Kayak from Mansle, 10km away. Further upstream is scenic Verteuil with Restaurant Jeux de Pots for the perfect end to a stroll through village.
  • Cognac, home of brandy, is 45km away. A perfect city to wander before stopping at a bistro - favourites include Le Bistrot de Claude or Poulpette. No visit is complete without a tasting tour, we recommend a visit to Jean-Luc Pasquet.
  • La Rochefoucauld - no trip to France is complete without a visit to a château. The La Rochefoucauld family have owned the château since 980. Nearby restaurant Chez Steph specialises in Limousin beef and good wine, and La Chocolaterie d'Antan is close too.
  • La Rochelle and the islands are 125km. La Rochelle's old harbour is picturesque and lined with seafood restaurants. Nearby Ile de Ré and Ile d'Oléron accessed by bridges have many sandy beaches whilst stunning Ile d'Aix and Ile Madame are accessed by boat.
  • Saint Amant de Boixe is 3km, so well within cycling or walking distance. It has the best local supermarket, a boulangerie and our favourite restaurant, Auberge de l'Abbaye. We also provide passes to all our guests to the tennis courts in the village.
