The Experience
Old, mighty, atmospheric – yet so homely. Enormous rooms, high heavy-beamed ceilings, large windows with sensational valley views; terraced gardens and animals; impressive bedrooms up an ancient spiral staircase that sets the imagination reeling; with their handsome wardrobes, polished beds and heated terracotta floors. Twice a week Hélène prepares dinner for guests in her modernised 17th-century tower kitchen (wood-fired range, stone sink, cobbled floor). She makes her own bread, honey, jams and walnut aperitif, and the wines come from their Montpellier vineyard. Stay one night and you’ll wish you’d stayed more.

We stayed on the way to Provence, and rather wishes we had arranged to stay for more than one night. The Chateau is as they describe and a wonderful place to stay. It is only 10 minutes away from the main road from Grenoble, but is incredibly tranquil. We had dinner there too, and I have to say they undersell the catering. When we booked, they said the dinner would be cooked by the owners daughter. What they didn't say, was that the owners daughter runs a restaurant in the grounds of the castle, which people come from outside to visit! Excellent fixed-price menu choices at sensible prices.

Local points of interest from Jacques & Hélène Rossi
- Fantastic base for mountain walks along the Vercors mountain range. You can catch the chair lift from the Col de l'Arlezier resort to the foot of the “Deux Soeurs” mountain chain to spot chamois, marmottes or simply enjoy the view over the Alps.
- You can visit the city of Grenoble, explore the old city centre, walk up the Bastille’s fortifications or enjoy a ride in the old Telepherique over the city.
- You can take on the legendary Tour de France climb up l’Alpe d’Huez or equally some of the smaller challenging mountain roads with breathtaking scenery.
- The Mont Aiguille Grenoble in the Trieves region, is where the French tradition of mountain-climbing started with the first mountain ascent in 1492. You can follow the tradition and climb it or do a day’s long walk, the famous “Tour du Mont Aiguille”
- The Château de Vizille is the most important châteaux of the 'Dauphiné' and played an important part in the start of the French revolution. You can visit the French Revolution Museum or spend time in the well maintained family friendly gardens.
- The Himalayan “Passerelles” of Treffort by the Lake of Monteynard-Avignonet are unique in Europe, they unable you to walk above the lake and offer breathtaking and plunging views of the lake below.

How can you rate a place like this! It was everything I had hoped for and more. It was a fabulous time back into history with this very special place! The accommodations, the foos, the owners all were a plus. A great place to visit!
