The Experience

The hilltop village of Vouvant is one of the loveliest in Western France – the impressive château was once a medieval citadel, protected by a moat on one side, high walls on the other and lined by a series of guard towers; there’s much history lurking here. Your attractive cottage is simple and unfussy, with a palette of warm and sunny tones, plenty of comfortable seating, good art and books – it’s a restful place to be.

The well-equipped kitchen is big enough for joiners in – you can eat indoors at a sleek wooden table with candles, or outside on balmy days by the pool. Find a shady spot for a snooze, take in the clear views from the garden of the wonderful tower dominating the town. There are good footpaths into lovely countryside straight from the door.

Eat at a choice of restaurants a stroll away, return to your tranquil cottage and quiet bedrooms with well-dressed beds and nothing to disturb the peace.

Reviews

I have come to this enchanted spot for years. There is something very special about the location, architecture, medieval ruins and of course the tower that sits atop the town. It is paradise for walkers, but the coast is not far away either for day trips. This cottage is a beautiful, simple building which would be a wonderful setting for memorable holidays far from the madding crowd.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're steps away from an excellent bakery, bars for coffee, a brocante and artisan shops as well as good restaurants. The 11th-century church has some wonderful medieval carvings and there are festivals and activities all year round. Walks and cycles abound through the Mervent Forest, and there are wide sandy beaches less than an hour away for swimming, kitesurfing and beachcombing.

Local points of interest from Rupert & Julliette Cattell

  • The village in which you will be staying is steeped in history and is designated as one of the most beautiful villages in France. The cottage is in the centre of the village, so it's only a short stroll to the four resaurants/bars the village offers.
  • If you enjoy walking or cycling you will not be disappointed. The vast Mervent oak forest is a few minutes away and the countryside is criss-crossed with well sign-posted walks and cycle paths.
  • 15 minutes from Vouvant is the Renaissance town of Fontenay-le-Comte with its excellent Saturday morning market, and historic centre.
  • Puy de Fou - voted the best amusement park in the world and well worth a visit - is 45 minutes away, but be sure to book your tickets well before you arrive.
  • If you enjoy the coast the Île de Ré is an hour away, as are the vast sandy beaches of the Atlantic where you can always find a peaceful spot even in August!
  • La Rochelle is only an hour's drive, and is stunning, with beautiful port-side restaurants and many interesting boutiques as well as the main high street brands.
