The Experience
Slow down as you spiral up from Lake Como to a 400-year-old cascina floating in Spina Verde’s bucolic hills. Be inspired by soaring Alpine views and by Samuel’s stylish eco-friendly restoration. The smell of fresh pine wafts through stone-walled bedrooms with huge beams, fireplaces, oriental rugs and bold red splashes. You lay your sleepy head on organic pillows, scribble postcards on reclaimed tables, fling open shutters to mountain views. Nature keeps the old farm estate beautiful with wild flowers, birds, bees and other creatures who buzz, tweet, flutter and scurry around the chestnuts, fruit trees and olives. Stroll through them to a hidden thousand-year-old sanctuary. Breakfast – perhaps homemade pancakes, organic eggs, garden berries – is a treat under the portico or in the vaulted Sala da Pranzo, where logs crackle in a new fireplace. Above this, an ‘Open Space’ offers a blank, bean-bagged canvas for creative gatherings. Pop to the village restaurant for dinner or roll through the hills to Switzerland. Samuel and Mimma’s enthusiasm for this special spot will warm your spirit, and the scenery will thrill your heart.

The best place we have stayed in Italy. Samuel is a thoughtful and hard working host. Breakfast on the terrace was a delight, and a hastily prepared lunch when we arrived early was much appreciated. Clearly, much hard work has gone into making the Cascina the place that it is today.

Delightfully restored building with comfortable and spacious rooms. Good simple ecologically sourced food. Samuel makes one feel a very welcome guest in his home. Looking forward to the natural swimming pool on our next visit.

We discovered Cascina Rodiani, from the Sawdays website and made our first contact with Samuel by email via Sawdays. It is a delightful old beautifully restored farmhouse high up a hill above Como. Everything about our stay was excellent and relaxing, including a lovely dinner and superb breakfast. Samuel and his wife are excellent hosts. We had a large comfortable bedroom with a modern bathroom with large walk-in shower. How delightful to sit in the early evening outside looking down the valley with a glass of wine before the delicious dinner. A small criticism is the price of the wine €18.

Everything about this place and the hospitality is wonderful. The setting, even in deepest winter, is memorable. Samuel and Mimma have restored the property with enormous enthusiasm and sensitivity. The plentiful food is simple, traditional Italian, but beautifully prepared with the highest quality ingredients, much of it locally produced. Rooms are very nicely furnished, spotlessly clean and well-equipped. If pushed, the only improvement that we could suggest would be a little stronger lighting in our bedroom.

Samuel is an excellent host and the farmhouse is a stunning place to stay. I would recommend to anyone visiting the area. Delicious fresh local produce for the meals, welcoming staff, and excellent recommendations about local sites and restaurants. The area is also beautiful from every angle.
