The Experience
Spend long lazy days on the terrace which runs the full length of the house – views extend to the valley below and you’ll find a barbecue, fridge and gas cooker by the pool. Bright, sunny interiors have comfortable sofas, French windows, a big dining table and steps up to a cosy TV area should you want to watch a film.
The kitchen is large, with a central island for prepping, a huge fridge/freezer and all the kit you need – fun to cook together in here, open a bottle of wine and chat while you’re chopping. You can stock up in Castelnuovo, just a five-minute drive. Two double bedrooms are both en suite with views over the terrace and garden – you’ll sleep peacefully as you can’t hear the main road. Wander an acre of private gardens with its own vineyard.
It’s a grand spot for two couples, there are walks from the door, underfloor heating for cooler months, a well-equipped laundry room and Leigh, the caretaker, is always on hand.

Location
The neighbourhood
It's entirely peaceful and private up here, surrounded by tree-covered mountains and valleys – the views and sunsets will be sublime. Head off by car to explore many restaurants hidden in the valleys. Castelnuovo is a five-minute drive and has good local shopping, restaurants and a train station. Lucca is a 35-minute drive, Pisa and Forte dei Marmi one hour and Florence is one hour 40 minutes.
Local points of interest from Leigh
- Castelnuovo di Garfagnana – 3 mins. This medieval town has cafés, artisan shops, the Rocca Ariostesca and a weekly market full of local produce – perfect for relaxed wandering.
- The Apuan Alps and Apennines offer superb hiking and fantastic mountain-biking trails, from gentle routes to thrilling climbs with wide open views.
- Beautiful Lucca is only 40 minutes away. Cycle the famous city walls, explore historic streets, enjoy boutique shopping, gelato and classic Tuscan restaurants.
- The sandy beaches of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi are easy day trips – great for swimming, sunbathing, seaside lunches or sunset walks along the promenade.
- Enjoy summer music festivals in Barga and surrounding villages, plus nearby river swimming, horse riding, adventure parks, bike hire and peaceful countryside evenings.
- Local markets, delis and trattorias celebrate Garfagnana’s slow-food culture – chestnut dishes, cheeses, honey, cured meats and seasonal produce from nearby farms.

Villa Monteperpoli was lovely and welcoming, but also so luxurious! We felt like royalty staying there. The beds were super comfortable and the views were incredible. The place was extremely clean and Leigh was so helpful with anything we needed. She recommended the best local wine tastings and restaurants. The Villa feels very private in the mountains, but yet is a short drive from shops and restaurants in Castelnuovo and Barga. The restaurant within walking distance was also delicious with friendly staff. We had the most amazing time at The Villa and can't wait to come back next year!
