The Experience

The main old Casa Padronale where the family still live dates back to the 1700s. You stay in one of two converted buildings, one nearer the house and the other down by the lake for those who want to be more private. You look after yourselves but Marco and Paola are always on hand and will pass by each morning to see if you want freshly baked cakes, homemade yogurt, eggs and fruit and vegetables.

Living areas are cheerful and comfortable with super views over the valley, kitchens are compact but well-equipped and bedrooms are beamed and simple. A very generous welcome pack includes pecorino cheese, salami, a bottle of wine, and their own olive oil. If you prefer, Paola will cook your evening meal which you can eat on the terrace and they are happy for you to help yourselves to veg from the garden.

Children will love petting the goats, sheep and horses, collecting eggs and the gentle dogs and cats lolling around.

Reviews

Paola and Marco were the perfect hosts and it was the best introduction to Umbria as it was our first time visiting. La Fonte is surrounded by nature everywhere you look and was exactly the break we needed from city life. Especially with the pool. We were greeted by a delicious selection of local food including honey, olive oil from the groves, fresh eggs and a homemade cake. We also had a fab meal prepared for us by Paola. Our apartment was so lovely and the beds were so comfy not to mention the views of the valley and the mountains from each room. It was super easy to get to Perugia as well.

Alice, Bristol

We had a fantastic week at La Fonte. We wanted a relaxing holiday somewhere beautiful and it definitely delivered. It's in the countryside, but only 20 mins drive from Perugia old town. Wonderful views, a fabulous new swimming pool, surrounded by Olive trees. Marco and Paola are such amazing hosts and made us feel so welcome. It has it all - an escape from everyday life, but close to so many great places to visit and restaurants etc. if you want that too. Waking up to a view over the olive groves was so beautiful. We would love to return.

Michele, Bristol

An oasis set deep in the wooded Umbrian hills. Utterly peaceful with cosy, colourful apartments, breath taking views and a charming host family nearby to look after you. Somewhere to escape to yet the urban delights of elegant Perugia are only 8kms away.

Location

The neighbourhood

This feels wonderfully remote, immersed in greenery on a hillside overlooking a valley with plenty of wildlife. Borrow mountain bikes for hilly exploring, take a picnic and hike to Monte Tezio - a three hour round trip. The nearest little trattoria is literally at the gate for local, rustic cooking - it's not an official restaurant as such and only the locals know about it. Perugia is 14 kms.

Local points of interest from Marco & Paola Faverio

  • Trekking to the Peak of the Eagle, inside the wood you pass through some suggestive water springs where you can swim to cool off before resuming the climb
  • Ascent to Mount Tezio, an hour's walk through woods and meadows to reach the summit where you can admire a 360 degree panorama. Exceptional to observe the setting sun diving into Lake Trasimeno
  • Stroll to the village of Montenero (the one you can see from all the apartments); an old, partially renovated village with an entrance arch that recalls the times of the knights of the round table
  • Between late October and early November you can help us picking the olives, then take them to the mill and go home with your extra virgin olive oil that will taste like your hands!
  • You can spend an evening dining with our neighbors, a local couple who only cooks products of their own production. The taste of a real Umbrian dinner; they will put on your table what they eat too!
  • A visit to the pub "L'insolito" in Montelaguardia (5 km) is absolutely worth it; perfect single-origin coffees, delicious sweet and savory dishes, a nice choice of wines and delicatessens, the kindness of the managers, Paolo and Rita

Introducing

Marco & Paola Faverio

Marco and Paola are originally from Milan - they have four children and moved here in 2005. The main house was pretty much as it is now but they converted the apartments from old agricultural buildings and they are very generous hosts.
