The Experience

On a bucolic Umbrian hilltop, a rustic 18th-century farmhouse with oodles of space for large families or groups to spread out and go slow. Rambling gardens shaded with fig, cherry and pear trees slope towards a blissful pool; perch on a sun lounger with a good book and listen to the birdsong. Rosemary has transformed this sturdy old building into a home packed with character and comfort. Beamed ceilings remain and brick arches connect large, terracotta-tiled rooms. A well-equipped new kitchen has a big wooden table for sociable meals; thoughtful welcome goodies including wine, olive oil and jam give you a head-start with your shopping. In sunny weather, eat al fresco under the shade of the pergola, with fabulous views of Lake Trasimeno and the Apennines in the distance. Seven bedrooms, most en suite, are simple, light and airy; cosy sitting rooms on each floor provide escape routes when it’s full house and noisy. Play pool and table tennis, or escape to local vineyards for wine tasting, medieval Montepulciano for history and architecture and culture.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Rosemary Morgan & Mark Damazer

  • Cantagallina is a hamlet of 5 houses in the middle of farmed land overlooking Lake Trasimeno, just a few miles from the border between Umbria and Tuscany. There are endless choices of things to do to suit all interests and ages.
  • For those who like wine and food there are good local shops, including weekly markets and farm shops. The kitchen is well-stocked for cooking at home, with many cookbooks, or we can put you in touch with local cooks, or you can explore nearby restaurants.
  • There are a couple of vineyards within 6 miles that arrange visits (one stores its maturing bottles in an Etruscan tomb), or visit the enotecas in Montepulciano, the Trasimeno area or, further afield in Montefalco or Orvieto.
  • For those who want more exercise than the pool (12m) offers there are two circular routes from the house for runs of 4-5 miles, tennis, horseriding and golf within 6 miles, windsurfing on the lake and a fantastic shop for cycle rentals in Castiglione
  • For those who just want to chill there are plenty of corners in shade or sun in the garden, beautiful hill towns for some coffee and life-watching. Or be amazed by the exuberant decorations and exquisite pastries at our favourite cafe in Castiglione.
